WrestleMania 34: Best Directions for Braun Strowman's Raw Tag Title Storyline

Anthony MangoMar 15, 2018

On this week's episode of Monday Night Raw, The Bar finally discovered who they would face at WrestleMania 34, but it wasn't something they would have seen coming.

Instead of The Revival, The Good Brothers, Titus Worldwide, Heath Slater and Rhyno or The Miztourage coming out on top in the Battle Royal match, the No. 1 contender ended up being one person: Braun Strowman.

As Raw ended, a question lingered: Would Raw general manager Kurt Angle allow this to happen or will the storyline take a different direction?

At face value, it makes no sense for a solo act to be able to challenge for a tag team title, but there have been weird instances in the past surrounding these championships.

When Daniel Bryan and Kane formed Team Hell No, they both tried to argue they were the solo tag team champions, but that never actually came to pass.

There have also been numerous times over the course of WWE's history where one half of the tag team champions was forced to defend the titles on their lonesome as their partner was injured or taken out of the equation in some way.

However, there has never been an instance where one person held any of the tag team titles in WWE by themselves, so Strowman is in a strange and unusual position.

If WWE wants to go down the historic route and give Strowman something impressive for a WrestleMania moment, this match should stay the way it's currently booked and he should not only go on to fight The Bar by himself but also win the titles.

Sheamus and Cesaro aren't a couple of losers who lucked their way into becoming champions on four separate occasions, so this shouldn't be a squash match where the two of them combined are unable to put a dent in The Monster Among Men.

Instead, Strowman should have a fight on his hands as he's going into this with the handicap of two-on-one, even though he has been booked as someone who can take on multiple people at once.

It's a different story when someone his size is facing two or three people with the build of James Ellsworth, where he can destroy them with ease, in comparison to two men who have eight championships combined along with their four title reigns together.

Still, if anybody is able to accomplish this feat, it's the guy who has been steamrolling through everyone in the company for months.

But all of that is only if Strowman fights The Bar by himself. There are some alternative scenarios that may happen instead.

Since he was never supposed to be in the No. 1 contender's match to begin with and WWE has not made this an official match yet, there is a good chance Angle switches something up.

One way to do that would be to force Strowman to take on a tag team partner for the match, which could see the next few weeks leading up to WrestleMania including a storyline of the behemoth trying to find someone he meshes well with.

That in itself could be the most fun aspect of this feud, as it's doubtful Strowman has anybody who would match his intensity and power as well as his personality.

He's taken a liking to Alexa Bliss in the Mixed Match Challenge, but that's because he thinks she's cute. The same won't be said for someone such as Goldust.

Then again, if any of them are available to come back from their injuries, he might be able to find a kindred spirit in Big Show, Samoa Joe or Big Cass because of their size, or even Dean Ambrose because of his penchant for anarchy.

Strowman could also be forced to pair up with rival Elias for a goof, as the two clearly don't get along.

All of this assumes this match is even going to happen, but it's important to also take into account the possibility it gets scrapped altogether.

Angle could simply say he never authorized Strowman's involvement in the match, nullifying the result and setting up something else for The Bar at WrestleMania.

If that happens, Strowman is not going to take it happily, but since he won a Battle Royal to earn this title shot, Angle could motivate him to enter the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal instead.

That would be a great way to announce the match as returning for the fifth year in a row, since it isn't currently advertised for the card.

With HBO airing a documentary dedicated to Andre the Giant just a few days after WrestleMania, it would make sense to have that match return and give it an even bigger spotlight than previous years. And Strowman is the modern-day equivalent of Andre when it comes to being the biggest and strongest on the roster.

All in all, this depends on WWE's plans going forward and what is to come after WrestleMania.

If there isn't room for Strowman to either hold the tag team titles on his own or be given a partner to have a title run with, it would be smarter to take him out of the match than to have him lose, because even a disqualification or count-out victory would seem like a cop-out.

However, if WWE does plan on having the man-mountain dominate an entire division with or without a partner, there had better also be a plan for how to take that title off him and put it on a legitimate team.

That is much easier to accomplish if someone is a partner for Strowman, as that person can take the loss for them; on his own, though, it would be difficult to find two Superstars able to match his power if WWE sets him up to beat two opponents at once.

WWE's creative team has to look at what storylines they want to tell down the line and factor in that just because Strowman winning the titles on his own would be historic and a WrestleMania moment, it might not be the best-case scenario for what's to follow.

One thing is for sure: Be it as a tag team champion, the next winner of the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal or something else revealed on the next Raw, whichever direction Strowman is in will showcase him as one of the biggest stars on the roster and a future major attraction for years to come.
