Jay Gruden Denies Report Redskins Want to Trade Su'a Cravens

Adam WellsMar 1, 2018

Washington head coach Jay Gruden says the team has no intention of trading retired safety Su'a Cravens

Per Kareem Copeland of the Washington Post, Gruden addressed reports the franchise was pursuing a deal involving Cravens.

"We're not trading him," Gruden said. "I just saw that on the ticker. He's still a member of this football team and we have every intention of seeing where he's at. I'll have to talk to him and see where he's at mentally. Physically, I know he's going to be in great shape."

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Wednesday that the Denver Broncos were talking to Washington about Cravens and are "the likely landing spot" if a deal is worked out.

After going through the preseason last year, Cravens retired one week before the regular season began on Sept. 10 against the Philadelphia Eagles. He left the door open to return two weeks later.

"I would just say God has a plan for everybody, and right now he's putting me through something he knows I can handle," he said, per ESPN.com's John Keim. "It will make me stronger. Hopefully, around this time next year I'll be back on that field."

Per Kimberley Martin of the Washington Post, Cravens applied for reinstatement to the NFL last month. He was projected to be Washington's starting safety last season after primarily playing linebacker during his rookie campaign.

A second-round pick by Washington in 2016, Cravens recorded 34 total tackles, one sack and one interception in 11 games.
