Gregg Popovich Says It's 'Pretty Simple' Why Charity Is Important
San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich explained Tuesday why he believes it's important for people in his position to give to charity.
"Because we're rich as hell, and we don't need it all, and other people need it," Popovich said prior to the Spurs' game against the Brooklyn Nets, according to ESPN.com's Michael C. Wright. "Then, you're an ass if you don't give it. Pretty simple."
Popovich also offered some perspective when a reporter asked how the Spurs were able to tread water despite losing Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green and Tony Parker to injuries for extended stretches this season.
"It's basketball. It's not the Middle East peace process. It's not figuring our why our democracy is being eroded," he said, per the New York Post's Brian Lewis. "It's pick-and-roll. Big deal."
According to Wright, Popovich has worked with several nonprofit organizations, including Shoes That Fit, the Innocence Project and the San Antonio Food Bank—which partners with the Spurs for their annual Champions Against Hunger charity dinner.
