Having his father, former New York Yankees outfielder Clay Bellinger, involved in the competition was a significant holdup for him deciding to join. He explained Friday that he was "still waiting on" hearing back from Major League Baseball whether it would be allowed, per Joshua Thornton of MLB.com.
It seems the league agreed to the stipulation, and one of the best young stars will get a chance to showcase his ability on the big stage.
Bellinger, who has played both outfield and first base for Los Angeles, burst onto the scene this year with incredible power numbers in a short time. In addition to his home runs, he also has 56 RBI and leads the NL with a .633 slugging percentage.
This helped him earn a selection to the All-Star Game, making him the first Dodgers position player to accomplish this feat in his first season in the majors, per ESPN Stats & Info.
He will now try to knock off defending Home Run Derby champion Giancarlo Stanton in his home stadium of Marlins Park on July 10.
