Matt Barnes Pleads Guilty to Charges Stemming from December Nightclub Fight
Golden State Warriors small forward Matt Barnes pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct Tuesday for his role in a December brawl at a New York City nightclub.
TMZ Sports reported Barnes reached an agreement that will see him complete 10 days of community service in exchange for the guilty plea. He was originally charged with misdemeanor assault.
Rebecca Rosenberg of the New York Post noted Barnes allegedly strangled Jasmine Besiso and assaulted Myrone Powell, who had come to help Besiso, during a Dec. 5 incident at Avenue New York. The NBA player's lawyer, Alex Spiro, denied the claims.
"The complainant and their companions, we have reason to believe, were intoxicated, using substances, and that they were the initial aggressors," he said.
DeMarcus Cousins, Barnes' former teammate with the Sacramento Kings, was also at the club that night but didn't face criminal charges and was "cleared of all wrongdoing," per Marc Stein of ESPN.com.
TMZ Sports pointed out Barnes and Cousins were both named in a civil lawsuit related to the brawl, which is still pending. Barnes is also due back in court to update the community service in August.
The 37-year-old California native signed with the Warriors in March after getting waived by the Kings. He played a limited role as the Dubs cruised through the NBA playoffs, defeating the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Finals to win their second championship in three years.
Barnes is set to become an unrestricted free agent July 1.
