While this was only a brief interview where his words could easily have been in jest, Elway would join a growing list of current and former NFL players displaying greater awareness of the effects playing football has on the brain.
As seen in the following video courtesy of the Players' Tribune, Sapp explained the reasoning behind his decision to donate his brain:
In an article accompanying the video, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive standout attributed memory issues to his playing career:
"I've also started to feel the effects of the hits that I took in my career. My memory ain't what it used to be. And yeah, it's scary to think that my brain could be deteriorating, and that maybe things like forgetting a grocery list, or how to get to a friend's house I've been to a thousand times are just the tip of the iceberg. So when it comes to concussions, CTE and how we can make our game safer for future generations, I wanted to put my two cents in—to help leave the game better off than it was when I started playing."
Sapp spent 13 NFL seasons with the Bucs and Oakland Raiders before retiring at the conclusion of the 2007 season as a seven-time Pro Bowler.
Elway is the current general manager of the Broncos, but he was previously the team's starting quarterback for 16 seasons from 1983 through 1998.
Considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time, Elway is a two-time Super Bowl winner, one-time NFL MVP and nine-time Pro Bowler.
