Kevin Durant Talks LeBron James After 2017 Finals MVP Win, Tells Mom 'We Did It'

Alec NathanJun 12, 2017

Basking in the glow of his first NBA title and a Finals MVP trophy, Kevin Durant took time to reflect on his evolving rivalry with LeBron James

Speaking to ABC's Doris Burke on the postgame podium, Durant discussed his back-and-forth battle with James and the satisfaction that accompanied evening their head-to-head Finals record at one win apiece.

"He's the only person that I was looking at since 2012," Durant said, per the NBA on TNT on Twitter. "He's the only one that I looked at and said, 'He's the only guy that can look me eye-to-eye.' And I knew it was gonna be a battle. I was trying to challenge him. He averaged a damn triple-double. Can't stop the guy. But we battled, and I told him, 'We tied up now.'"

Durant was also ecstatic when addressing his mother, Wanda, as he reflected on their journey together.

"We did it," Durant said, per ESPN's Rachel Nichols. "I told you when I was eight years old. We did it."

Now in possession of hardware that justifies his decision to join the Warriors after they romped their way to 73 wins a season ago, Durant knows what it takes to churn out championship-caliber efforts and take down the league's best.

In other words, this may not be the last time he soaks in a confetti shower with hardware lining his palms.
