Golden State Warriors Set Longest Winning Streak in North American Major Sports
The Golden State Warriors made a dramatic comeback late in Game 3 against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday evening, scoring the last 11 points of the game to erase a six-point deficit with a little over three minutes remaining in the contest.
Kevin Durant capped off the comeback when he nailed a three-pointer with 45 seconds remaining on the game clock. The Cavaliers went without a bucket in the final three minutes of the game, sealing their fate when Andre Iguodala blocked LeBron James with 12 seconds remaining.
With the victory, the Warriors extended their winning streak to 15 games. It broke a tie with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1992-93 for the longest postseason winning streak in the top four North American leagues, per ESPN Stats & Info. The New York Yankees from both 1927-32 and 1998-99 hold the longest streak (12) for MLB while the New England Patriots won 10 straight games from 2002 to 2006 for the NFL's longest.
After blowing a 3-1 lead to the Cavs during the 2016 postseason, the Warriors have not lost another game en route to a 3-0 lead in this postseason. The club can certainly draw from the perils of last year's playoffs for inspiration as they attempt to close out Cleveland.
Should they win Game 4 to finish off the series, the Warriors would be the first team in NBA history to go undefeated in the postseason, per NBA History. The contest tips off Friday evening at 9 p.m. ET at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. If the Cavaliers avoid the sweep, the series would then return to Oakland for Game 5 at Oracle Arena.
