Manchester United Transfer News: Latest Rumours on Marquinhos and Romelu Lukaku

Stuart NewmanApr 22, 2017

Manchester United are ready to part with as much as €70 million to land highly rated Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos in the summer.

That's according to Bruno Andrade and Loic Tanzi of Goal, who reported that the Brazilian will be one of United's key targets when the transfer window opens in July.

The Premier League giants are also said to be willing to offer Marquinhos £10 million per year in wages, although it's not going to be as simple as laying astronomical amounts of cash on the table to secure his services.

Andrade and Tanzi report that PSG are reluctant to sell one of their shining stars and will not entertain bids from any club, no matter the price.

Marquinhos arrived at PSG in 2013, and it wasn't long before he was a regular in the side.

His aerial presence and sublime ability on the ball make him a complete central defender, one who's set to be a huge name in world football for the foreseeable future. Here's a look at Marquinhos in action:

It's little wonder Manchester United are willing to dig so deep to bring him to Old Trafford, and based on the frailties of the squad, he's almost a necessary expense.

When quizzed on United's injury situation, manager Jose Mourinho had a damning yet fitting response:

Marquinhos has endured hamstring niggles in the past, but his long-term fitness has rarely been questioned—meaning he could be a mainstay of the United back line for years to come.

The 22-year-old's deal in the French capital expires in the summer of 2019, and PSG are believed to be negotiating with Marquinhos on a new deal despite being unwilling to meet his lofty demands.

Even so, the player's father, Marcos Barros, told Goal that it's more about his son's stature in the team rather than the money:

"It's not just a matter of money," Barros said. "It's a matter of how he can be one of the best players in the team. PSG needs to show him that he is one of the most important players in the team."

United could certainly offer Marquinhos the superstar status he craves along with a healthy paycheck to top it all off.

Elsewhere, Everton striker Romelu Lukaku is reportedly one of United's top priorities in the upcoming transfer window.

Jeremy Cross of Daily Star wrote that Zlatan Ibrahimovic's injury will twist Mourinho's arm and force him to launch a big-money bid in the summer.

Ibrahimovic only signed an initial one-year deal when he touched down at Old Trafford last year, and despite his brilliance all campaign, there's no word on whether he'll still don the red shirt come 2017-18.

Lukaku is a more than capable replacement for the mercurial Swede, although United will have to fight off interest from the Belgian's former club Chelsea if they want to bring him in, per the London Evening Standard (h/t Mark Brus of Metro).

The success of Mourinho's opening season at Manchester United will be determined by whether he secures Champions League football for next term, making the next few weeks crucial for the transfer window.

Landing players of Marquinhos and Lukaku's calibre won't be easy without the promise of competing among Europe's elite.
