Junior Galette Reportedly Re-Signs with Washington Redskins

Alec NathanFeb 25, 2017

The Washington Redskins are bringing back edge rusher Junior Galette on a one-year deal valued at $800,000, according to ESPN's Adam Caplan

The Washington Post's Master Tesfatsion confirmed the news, adding that Galette will earn a base salary of $775,000 to go with a $25,000 workout bonus.

Tesfatsion noted the new one-year deal was a renegotiation of Galette's 2016 deal, which was worth $1.6 million with $2.5 million available in incentives.

Galette initially signed with the Redskins prior to the 2015 season. However, he's yet to appear in a regular season game for Washington after he suffered season-ending Achilles tears before each of the last two campaigns.

Despite the serious injury woes, Washington has remained committed to the 28-year-old after he racked up 31.5 sacks between 2011-2014 with the New Orleans Saints

"The loyalty is very rare especially in this league," Galette said of Washington's decision to give him another look, per Stephen Czarda of the team's official website. "For someone to tear both of their Achilles and still be getting a third contract, that’s something you don’t see every day. I owe myself first, of course, but I feel like I owe this team and this city a lot."

As the fresh salary figures indicate, signing Galette once more is essentially a move devoid of risk. In fact, it could prove to be a signing that pays big dividends if Galette is finally able to stay healthy.

Not only is he signed to a low-cost deal, but Galette should be motivated to try to make up for lost time and parlay a strong 2017 into more contractual stability down the line.

"This is clearly a test, and this can either be a turn into a positive or just feel sorry for myself and not play again," he said, per Czarda. "So I turned it into a positive and here I am now with another opportunity with a team that really believes in me."
