Miami Heat Reportedly Trying to Trade Josh McRoberts, Wayne Ellington

Alec NathanFeb 22, 2017

The Miami Heat have been one of the NBA's hottest teams since Jan. 1, but they're reportedly looking to shake up their roster before Thursday's trade deadline.

According to The Vertical's Chris Mannix, the Heat have "shopped" a package featuring Wayne Ellington and Josh McRoberts with the apparent intent of "moving contracts."

That package may not look like much on the surface, but the Heat could conceivably sweeten it by sprinkling in a draft pick if an interested party comes along and is willing to take those deals off Miami's hands.

Ellingtonwho is averaging a career-high 10.9 points per game and shooting 35.5 percent from three—is earning $6 million this season and can be wiped off the books entirely before free agency rolls around.

As it stands, Ellington's $6.3 million payout for next season is non-guaranteed and can be cleared off the balance sheet if he's waived before the league's negotiating moratorium ends this summer.

Then there's the injury-plagued McRoberts, who was limited to 59 appearances during his first two seasons on South Beach.

Now in his third season with the Heat, McRoberts is sidelined indefinitely with a stress fracture in his left foot. Before going down, the 29-year-old was averaging 4.9 points, 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists on 37.3 percent shooting from the field and 41.9 percent shooting from three.

Previously signed to the mid-level exception, McRoberts is earning $5.8 million this season and will make a shade over $6 million in the final year of his deal before he becomes an unrestricted free agent in 2018.

With a slew of emerging contributors like Dion Waiters, Josh Richardson, Rodney McGruder and James Johnson making Ellington and McRoberts expendable, it's no wonder the Heat are trying to make moves before 3 p.m. ET.

However, it will likely take some serious sweetening of the pot for the Heat to convince a rival that it should commit to a deal over the next few hours.
