The standout contest of the day was the match between the two domestic rivals, and it turned out to be the most entertaining, too.

Miguel Acosta struck after 13 minutes to give Atletico the lead, setting the early tempo for a frenetic game.

Sevilla's task was made even more difficult in the 18th minute, too, as midfielder Jose Calderon was issued with a straight red card; their lack of discipline continued throughout the first period, and they were down to nine men with just 25 minutes on the clock, as Alejandro Viedma picked up two yellow cards in quick succession.

Despite their two-man disadvantage, Sevilla battled gamely and, against the odds, found themselves back on level terms after Jose Maria Amo converted a 57th-minute penalty.

Atletico were jarred into life after this setback and were on the front foot again quickly, with Salomon restoring their lead. Yet they were still unable to shake off Sevilla.

A foul in the area and a second yellow card for Manny gave Sevilla the chance to equalise again, which Amo seized. But heartbreakingly for the visitors, after scrapping for so long, they let parity slip in the 86th minute when Mues netted.

Elsewhere, Porto were comfortable 3-0 winners against Viitorul. Per the competition's official Twitter feed, in 18-year-old Rui Pedro, who grabbed one of the goals, the Portuguese side possess one of the most prolific strikers in the competition:

The standout performance of the day came from Salzburg, who dominated PSG to win 5-0.

The hosts started in scintillating style, with Hannes Wolf giving them a 15th-minute lead. From that point on, Oliver Filip took over for Salzburg, as he slotted three times to clinch a comfortable win for the Austrian outfit.

Salzburg's official Twitter feed paid tribute to their efforts and particularly the first-half showing from the youngsters:

The final team to secure their spot in the quarters on Tuesday were Benfica, as they won a dramatic penalty shootout 5-4 against PSV Eindhoven.

The two teams couldn't be separated after 90 minutes, with Benfica equalising PSV's opener. After no goals in extra time, penalties were needed to decide the contest.

A miss from Benfica's Diogo Mendes gave PSV the chance to progress, but Joel Piroe saw his kick stopped by Fabio Duarte. It was profligacy that cost them, with Buta scoring the next Benfica penalty and Duarte making another big save from Joey Konings to put the Portuguese through.

De Telegraaf's Jeroen Kapteijns captured the decisive moment in a hard-fought match:

Ajax are also into the last eight, as they were too strong for Dynamo Kiev; Kaj Sierhuis bagged a goal in each half to make life easy for the Dutch outfit.
