Anderson County Sheriff Chad McBride told WSPA.com that an investigation was underway. Clemson University previously confirmed Henderson had gone missing, and a search party had been commissioned to find him.

"Bert Henderson did not come to work on Monday morning, and after trying unsuccessfully to reach him by phone, members of the IPTAY staff contacted a family friend. When they could not locate Bert, law enforcement officials were notified. At this time we have no further update, and will pass any new information along as it is received. We ask anyone with knowledge of his whereabouts to contact their local law enforcement agency," Clemson University said in a statement.

Lt. Sheila Cole said officers searched for Henderson with search and rescue teams, helicopters and K-9 units.

Henderson had worked at Clemson since 1978, beginning as an athletic trainer before moving into the administrative office. His work in the office of planned giving involved setting up meetings with donors and ensuring the financial stability of Clemson's athletic programs.

He is survived by two daughters, Amy Lee and Kimberly.
