Sheldon Richardson Comments on Jets' Loss to Rams

Scott PolacekNov 13, 2016

The New York Jets lost an ugly 9-6 game to the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday, dropping to 3-7 in the process. Defensive end Sheldon Richardson had an NSFW response when asked what's left to play for, per Kimberley A. Martin of Newsday:

Richardson tallied seven tackles against Los Angeles, including two for losses. He was part of a strong defensive outing by the Jets, as the Rams managed just three field goals and 280 yards.

New York, however, scored only one touchdownand missed the ensuing extra-point attempt. During Bryce Petty's first start at quarterback, the offense looked lost and couldn't replicate the defense's stingy performance.

The Jets, in last place in the AFC East, appear to be on their way to a high draft pick instead of a playoff spot. They still have to play the 7-1 New England Patriots twice, so things likely won't get much better down the stretch.

Richardson said he won't quit, but even he has struggled during New York's disappointing season. The 2013 Defensive Rookie of the Year has just 1.5 sacks this year after tallying eight in 2014 and five in 2015.

He could have avoided this year's frustration had the Jets moved him to the Dallas Cowboys before the trade deadline, but Dallas executive vice president Stephen Jones said New York's asking price was too high, per Charean Williams of the Star-Telegram.

Now Richardson is stuck playing out the string for a Jets team that's going nowhere fast. From an individual standpoint, he would benefit from turning his season around ahead of his impending free agency in 2018.

By not rolling over—as he eloquently put it—Richardson would send a message that he is willing to play with maximum effort even for a losing team.
