WWE Superstar Power Rankings Ahead of Nov. 7 Raw
Survivor Series is set for Nov. 20, and WWE Superstars on Raw and SmackDown are preparing to don their Sunday best on the rare cross-brand pay-per-view.
Rankings are as important as ever as WWE Superstars flex their muscles for not only brand supremacy, but also WWE superiority as the best on both shows.
Unimpressive main event performances from both world champions will keep them out of the top spot, but how far did they fall? Will future world-title feuds with fresh opponents help them regain their momentum? Did Charlotte Flair and Sasha Banks' history-making main event make an impact on the list? No, not that list.
10. Charlotte Flair
1 of 10The constant flip-flopping of the Raw Women's Championship is causing the division to lose momentum. Sure, Charlotte made history in her unprecedented Hell in a Cell main event against Sasha Banks, but it was a sloppy match filled with miscues.
The backstage push that reportedly led to the women suddenly headlining Hell in a Cell, per Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t Raj Giri of Wrestling Inc), made the moment feel rushed as opposed to WWE having several weeks to promote what should have been a special event.
Though women's wrestling is improved in WWE, Banks, Charlotte and Co. have yet to reach the consistently high level of performance that made them stars in NXT. In all likelihood, the women's Survivor Series match will be one of many in which the teams don't get along. This will do little to continue to elevate this division.
9. Dean Ambrose
2 of 10Dean Ambrose has been in the WWE World Championship picture for too long. The never-ending feud between Ambrose and AJ Styles is indicative of the lack of roster depth on SmackDown.
The blue brand has used James Ellsworth to dress this feud up a bit, but it needs to end. Ambrose might be a better fit competing for the Intercontinental Championship, working with up-and-coming heels such as Baron Corbin or even turning heel himself.
SmackDown is the second-tier show, meaning it is in a position to take more risks when it comes to future No. 1 contenders. WWE needs to begin investing in babyfaces to compete against AJ Styles as opposed to stringing Ambrose along. With WWE once again teasing a Shield reunion, maybe there's a chance Ambrose could be relevant on Raw.
8. The Miz
3 of 10The Miz feels like a big fish in a small pond on SmackDown. He carries himself like a main event Superstar and comes off as a superior choice to AJ Styles as a heel world champion. The days of his aggressive downfall following his run as a top star in 2011 seem well behind him, and WWE should consider elevating him to the main event sooner rather than later.
Miz has been entertaining in his feud with Dolph Ziggler, even through several interactions with The Spirit Squad. But he has bigger fish to fry. There's nothing "cool" about the former WWE champion; he's an obnoxious, well-dressed villain, and fans want to see him lose. The looming potential of an unlikely Miz-Daniel Bryan feud would vault Miz even further up this list.
7. Braun Strowman
4 of 10Braun Strowman has arrived in earnest, and WWE is invested in the heavyweight. Raw's presentation of the monster in quick, dominant matches is beginning to run its course, but WWE has been wise to book Strowman to demand more competition.
The former Wyatt Family member's victory in Raw's recent Battle Royal was a meaningful triumph that made him come off as the baddest dude in that locker room. WWE should consider him as the sole survivor in the upcoming Raw vs. SmackDown Survivor Series match.
Strowman is world-title material, and ratings continue to bottom out—per Showbuzz Daily (h/t Marc Middleton of Wrestling Inc)—with WWE catering to a hardcore audience. Strowman is a great choice as a more mainstream, unbeatable heavyweight champion a la Mark Henry, who helped SmackDown achieve record ratings on Syfy as world heavyweight champion, per James Caldwell of Pro Wrestling Torch.
6. Kevin Owens
5 of 10Kevin Owens seems to be running in place as WWE universal champion as his seemingly inevitable feud with Chris Jericho takes form. Owens needed outside interference from Jericho to defeat Seth Rollins in their Hell in a Cell matchup, and he won't be defending the championship at Survivor Series.
WWE has been wise in allowing Owens to blossom on his own as opposed to being promoted as Triple H's champion. Owens has been fine in his current role but is still being outdone by Chris Jericho, who seems to be getting more over by the second.
At this point, he might be another case study as to how WWE might need to go with a new philosophy with its world champion. The sneaky heel world champion has been done to death over the past year or so and hasn't created any groundbreaking content.
5. AJ Styles
6 of 10AJ Styles has been an above-average world champion, but his continued interactions with James Ellsworth haven't presented him in the best light. It's never good when the top champion racks up two losses to a journeyman jobber who is only celebrated ironically.
Remember, this is the same AJ Styles who defeated John Cena two times this year. WWE ought to act like it. The argument could be made that Styles needs a good showing at Survivor Series on Team SmackDown more than anybody. He also needs a new opponent to emerge to inject life into a once-promising championship reign that has since stalled.
It was quite painful watching Renee Young pretend to be excited for yet another main event between Ambrose and AJ Styles at TLC after the feud has already grown stale.
4. James Ellsworth
7 of 10Ellsworth has gone from feel-good story to a fixture in the main event on SmackDown. WWE has made the most out of the popularity of the former Braun Strowman victim, and it's conceivable he receives another world-title opportunity down the line after defeating AJ Styles by disqualification in his previous shot at the strap.
Ellsworth's merchandise is selling well, per Giri, and his face is all over SmackDown Live. Whether his appeal is ironic or not, there's something there, and WWE is running with it. As fun as Ellsworth's run has been, though, WWE would be wise to temper his push.
The more he threatens to become a world champion, the more fans will get caught up in underdog hysteria—and the less the WWE World Championship would mean.
3. Seth Rollins
8 of 10Seth Rollins has spent much of 2016 losing world-title matches, but WWE continues to make him a focal point on Raw. Whatever the future holds for Rollins, all signs point to him continuing to be a leading figure.
Monday on Raw, WWE teased a Shield reunion, and with Triple H conspicuous by his absence, it's only a matter of time before the future WWE Hall of Famer returns to feud with his former protege.
Survivor Series could be the night when Triple H returns to WWE programming to resume his feud with Rollins, and with WrestleMania season around the corner, it's likely a Rollins victory over Triple H would undo every world-title loss Rollins has suffered over the past several months.
2. Roman Reigns
9 of 10The Reigns man cometh. Despite Kevin Owens' world-title run, Raw feels like the Roman Reigns show. Following Hell in a Cell, Reigns discussed his intentions to go after the Universal Championship. According to Figure Four Online (h/t Middleton), there is talk of of a potential champion vs. champion match at the upcoming WWE Roadblock pay-per-view.
The anti-Reigns contingent that complains of The Big Dog getting a "superman push" would have a field day if Reigns were a dual champion. But WWE should go with it. Reaction to Reigns, whether positive or negative, would only strengthen the company, and having a hybrid babyface world champion would give WWE programming the shot in the arm that it needs with similar "cool" heel world champions on Raw and SmackDown.
Either way, Reigns is almost officially all the way back in the main event after an extended period in the midcard.
1. Chris Jericho
10 of 10Chris Jericho has once again reinvented himself, using his veteran instincts to catch the type of fire that every WWE Superstar of the New Era struggles to grasp. Jericho is the most entertaining part of either flagship show, and a potential interaction with James Ellsworth at Survivor Series could be fun.
Y2J and his current best friend, Kevin Owens, seem to be on a collision course for the Universal Championship.
And while Jericho is on borrowed time in his current WWE run, the promotion should consider giving him a run with the world championship by virtue of how hot he is right now.
