WWE Hell in a Cell 2016 Results: Most Memorable Moments from Event
WWE Hell in a Cell 2016 was another mediocre pay-per-view presentation—a show with more hits than misses but one that also failed to make great use of the gimmick match that encompassed it. Still, the show produced its fair share of memorable moments, primarily involving the night's three main events.
From the historic women's title match that closed the show to the United States Championship bout that opened things up, the extravaganza was defined by wars of attrition and championship allure.
Which moments from those two contests and the WWE Universal Championship match made the list?
Find out with this look back at WWE Hell in a Cell 2016.
5. Entrances Fit for Queens
1 of 5If you did not already know that Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks inside Hell in a Cell was a historic match, the entrances both Superstars made into the TD Garden in Boston hammered home the point.
Charlotte entered with the poise and class of a queen, carried by mere peasants to the squared circle in which she would chase her third title.
Banks entered like The Boss she is, riding in a luxury vehicle and being flanked by security along the way.
While they rang hollow, given the gigantic cell that awaited them, the flamboyance and grandeur of the moments helped solidify the significance of the match and the importance of the two women themselves.
4. Pop Is Jericho
2 of 5
The WWE Universal Championship match between Seth Rollins and Kevin Owens may have been one of the better matches of Sunday's pay-per-view, but neither of those men garnered the pop that Chris Jericho did as he sprinted to the ring, determined to help his best friend, Owens, successfully retain his title.
The reaction Y2J elicited as he entered the cell was not only one of "we like this guy," but it was also one of relief. The match between Rollins and Owens had been fine to that point, but a lack of fluid story and defined characters left fans unsure of who to cheer for.
Jericho was an intriguing, enthralling character who fans had thrown support behind in recent weeks—the result being a hero's welcome and further evidence that being yourself and discovering your own catchphrases and taglines will always get over more than heavily scripted lines written by those unfamiliar with the industry.
3. A Most Painful Accolade
3 of 5The war between Roman Reigns and Rusev culminated inside Hell in a Cell on Sunday, their heated rivalry deserving of the gimmick bout.
Rusev dominated the action and even appeared poised to win when he retrieved a chain from under the ring and used it to trap Reigns in The Accolade. The images of Rusev cranking on the hold, the chain wrapped in the teeth of his opponent, was appropriately brutal and violent.
Unfortunately, it was not enough to put the United States champion away.
Instead, Reigns fired back and won the match two minutes later, rendering the maneuver useless.
2. When She Comes Crashing Down...
4 of 5Sasha Banks took the fight to Charlotte right out of the gate Sunday, wasting little time brawling to the ringside area with the second-generation star despite the lowering of the cell.
The fight moved up the side of the steel structure until Charlotte seized control, grabbing hold of Banks and powerbombing her through the announcers' table.
That one spot would have long-reaching effects. Not only did it set up a false finish in which it appeared The Boss would have to forfeit the match, but it also was integral to the finish, which saw Banks' back give out due to the pain and punishment she endured, making it easier for Charlotte to secure the victory.
Speaking of which...
1. Charlotte Regains the Title
5 of 5Charlotte defeating Sasha Banks to win the Raw Women's Championship for a third time was the most memorable moment from Hell in a Cell for all the wrong reasons.
Emanating from Banks' hometown of Boston, all the pieces were in place for The Boss to finally defeat her primary foe and stand tall at the center of a whirlwind of emotion and triumph.
Instead, the heel went over again, WWE's apparent determination to create a Hall of Famer out of the second-generation wrestler winning out over moment, spectacle and logical booking decisions.
