Latest on Bergeron's Playing Status
Sunday, Oct. 16
Bruins head coach Claude Julien told reporters Bergeron is skating in Boston, but his status is to be determined for Monday's game against the Winnipeg Jets.
Bergeron Coming Off Career Season
Bergeron is coming off a terrific 2015-16 season for the Bruins that saw him tally a career-high 32 goals in 80 games. His 68 points were also his highest total since putting up 70 in 2006-07, but that came during a far more wide-open era of hockey than what's currently being played in the NHL.
The 31-year-old veteran has also remained mostly durable throughout his career. He's played in at least 80 games in three straight years, and the last time he missed more than 10 games in a season came all the way back in 2008-09.
One silver lining to the situation is the fact Bergeron played in the World Cup of Hockey for Canada during the preseason. He scored seven points in six games en route to helping the Canadians win the tournament, which should allow him to make a seamless transition into the lineup once healthy.
He talked about getting the chance to play alongside Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby in the event but also trying to maintain his style of play despite the more offensive role, per Fluto Shinzawa of the Boston Globe:
"It is different. But whoever you're up against, you've still got to do the job. You're still playing against some good players and some smart players.
I think I'm still playing my game the same way, trying to play 200 feet, trying to create as much as possible. When you're with Sid, it definitely helps a lot. He's creating a lot of chances for us. We're trying to take advantage of that.
"
David Backes and David Krejci will serve as the Bruins' top two centers until the alternate captain is ready. While they are a better team with him on the ice, they still have plenty of firepower in the lineup, as showcased in a 6-3 victory over the Columbus Blue Jackets in the Oct. 13 season opener.
