Blues Prospect Matthew Mayich Hospitalized After Collapsing During ASU Workout

St. Louis Blues prospect and Arizona State sophomore Matthew Mayich is continuing to undergo medical treatment after collapsing and being hospitalized following an outdoor workout last Thursday.

Blues president of hockey operations Doug Armstrong announced the news in a Wednesday statement in which he shared prayers for Mayich's "comfort and recovery."

The USHL and OHL also shared prayers for Mayich's recovery in Wednesday statements.

"Our thoughts are with Matthew, his parents John and Christina and the entire Mayich family," said OHL commissioner Bryan Crawford said in a statement. "Matthew spent four seasons in our league and earned the respect of everyone he played with and against. The entire Ontario Hockey League is thinking of him and pulling for him, and we are keeping his family close in our thoughts."

Victoria Beara, cousin of Mayich and wife of the Buffalo Sabres' Owen Power, spoke in a virtual prayer service held in Mayich's honor Tuesday, per the Arizona Republic's Rey Covarrubias Jr. and Robert Anglen.

Mayich, 21, was drafted by the Blues in 2023. After four seasons in the OHL, he spent his freshman NCAA season with Clarkson before transferring to ASU.

ASU vice president of media relations Chris Fiscus told The Athletic's Katie Strang and Jeremy Rutherford one of the team's student-athletes remained hospitalized as of Tuesday.

"The university is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the workout," Fiscus told Strang and Rutherford.

According to Strang and Rutherford, "Fiscus declined to answer if the team sanctioned the workout."

Mayich, a sixth-round NHL draft pick who has yet to sign with the Blues, contributed 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in 34 games on Clarkson's blue line last season.

He is part of a 10-person incoming transfer class that marked the largest group of DI signees in the country.
