Mike Perrin Comments on Charlie Strong, Texas Program After Oklahoma State Loss
Less than a month ago, Texas Longhorns head coach Charlie Strong helped orchestrate a 50-47 upset of the then-No. 10 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Now, Strong may be on the hot seat after Texas lost its second straight game.
The Longhorns fell 49-31 to the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday. Following the game, Texas athletic director Mike Perrin painted some doubt on his head coach's job security.
"We need to evaluate what happened here," Perrin said, according to OrangeBloods.com's Anwar Richardson, when asked about Strong's future.
Later, Perrin walked back the statement a bit, saying, "I'm not evaluating Charlie per se. I'm evaluating everything," per ESPN.com's Jake Trotter.
Strong brushed off the comments.
"Well, you're evaluated every day here," he said, according to Mike Finger of the San Antonio Express-News.
Some may argue the clock was ticking on Strong since Perrin succeeded Steve Patterson as Texas' athletic director. Patterson was responsible for Strong's hiring, so Perrin would potentially want to hire his own guy.
Joe Schad reported for ESPN.com last October, though, that Strong had the support of both Perrin and school president Greg Fenves.
Texas' 2-2 start may have shaken that support base. The Longhorns finished with a losing record in Strong's first two seasons, and as Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman tweeted, all of the optimism the Notre Dame win generated has evaporated:
Texas' next game could be a defining moment for Strong in Austin. The Longhorns face off with the Oklahoma Sooners on Oct. 8 at the Cotton Bowl.
While the shine has largely come off the Sooners, beating Oklahoma would buy Strong more time. Collecting a third consecutive loss, on the other hand, could be the beginning of the end for the 56-year-old.
