Josh McCown Injury Update: Browns QB Ruled Out in Week 3 vs. Dolphins

Rob GoldbergSep 19, 2016

Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown will miss Week 3 and possibly more with a shoulder injury.

Head coach Hue Jackson announced the news Monday, according to Tony Grossi of ESPN 850. Jackson named Cody Kessler as the likely Week 3 starter, per the team's official Twitter account.

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that McCown will not be placed on injured reserve, but Kessler will get "an extended look" under center.

McCown was already filling in for injured starter Robert Griffin III, but the team will now have to look toward its third option in as many games.

The veteran quarterback had an up-and-down game in Week 2 against the Baltimore Ravens, passing for 260 yards with two touchdowns but also two interceptions in the 25-20 loss. The defeat was even more embarrassing considering Cleveland had a 20-0 lead in the first quarter.

The Browns will now be forced to turn to Kessler, a third-round pick out of USC in the 2016 NFL draft. Steve Doerschuk of Canton Rep also believes the team will sign a free-agent quarterback this week.

In any case, Kenny Legan of ESPN noted this continues a wild trend for the franchise:

Kessler has yet to throw a pass in a regular-season game, last appearing in Week 4 of the preseason when he completed 10 of his 17 pass attempts for just 40 yards and no touchdowns. He was also sacked three times in the loss to the Chicago Bears.

Despite the lack of experience, the rookie believes he is prepared for the upcoming start, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com:

"

It's a physical game and you always have to be ready. It's kind of a next-man-up mentality and I prepared as hard as I could all week. I didn't have any nervousness or anxiousness, I was ready to go. Just because of my prep all week and learning from Josh and listening to what he did. Watching the reps he did and getting more reps in practice. I felt ready to go. If that did happen, I had the mindset of going in as the starter.

"

Cleveland will hope this confidence turns into success for his first start Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
