LeBron James' NBA Free Agency Decision Impacting Schedule Release, Adam Silver Says
LeBron James' pending free agency decision has impacted plenty of teams this offseason as they plan around where the veteran will end up, but that's not the only thing that's been affected.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said Thursday that the league can't finalize the 2026-27 schedule until James decides where he'll play.
"We have to finish up the schedule and where LeBron plays affects the schedule... It will influence how we set the schedule — opening week, Christmas," Silver said. "So I need him to make a decision."

James has seemingly kept his free agency decision within a small circle this offseason, but several reports have given an indication of where he's at in the process.
Chris Haynes of NBA on Prime reported earlier this week that James' agent, Rich Paul, said the four-time MVP has "all the information needed" to make a decision. ESPN's Shams Charania reported on the Pat McAfee Show on Thursday that James "is getting closer and closer to making a decision."
But even if James makes up his mind, it could be a while before he makes his decision public. Perhaps Silver's message on Thursday will encourage him to choose a team sooner rather than later.
Whatever team James ends up on will presumably get more nationally televised games than they would have previously. Even though James is no longer the best player in the world, he's still the most famous and will draw more ratings than most.
Plus, the 2026-27 campaign could be James' last, so the NBA will want to get James on primetime as much as it can.
James' top landing spots have widely been reported to be the Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers, Warriors and Timberwolves, though Charania noted that Cleveland, Miami and Philadelphia are ahead of the pack.
James appeared at Fanatics Fest on Thursday to record a live episode of his Mind the Game podcast with Tyrese Haliburton, but he didn't give much of an update on his decision.
Though he's 41, any team that lands James will automatically get better. He's lost a step or two but is still a solid scorer and a gifted playmaker, something any team in the league can benefit from.
