Pat Riley Hints at Heat's LeBron James Pursuit in NBA Free Agency After Giannis Trade with Bucks

The Miami Heat already pulled off a blockbuster trade this summer, landing Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis in a franchise-altering move.

But team president Pat Riley offered a strong indication on Thursday that the Heat are still very much chasing after LeBron James during Antetokounmpo's introductory press conference:

The entire NBA is waiting to see where James chooses to play the 2026-27 season, with the Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers seemingly the frontrunners.

LeBron didn't really offer any hints during an appearance at Fanatics Fest on Thursday, though he didn't completely avoid the topic either:

The Heat, meanwhile, seem like an incomplete roster.

The Giannis-Bam Adebayo pairing is a strong one. Bobby Portis, Andrew Wiggins, Nikola Jović, Pelle Larsson Tim Hardaway Jr. are solid role players.

But the team has an incredibly weak backcourt. The depth after their top eight or nine players is fairly non-existent. They don't really have a true point guard on the roster, though Giannis and Adebayo are capable of handling some of the playmaking duties.

James isn't the most natural fit with a Bam-Giannis frontcourt, though he'd give the team a natural lead playmaker and another excellent scoring option. And frankly, if you have the chance to sign James you do it and figure everything else out as you go.

There are perhaps better basketball fits for James among his suitors, or teams with higher championship ceilings. But the fact that he chose Miami once before in his career can't be ignored.

Nobody knows where James' next plane will land. Riley and the Heat are hoping it returns to South Beach.
