Cullen Jenkins to Re-Sign with Redskins: Latest Contract Details and Reaction

Mike ChiariSep 13, 2016

After he was released by the Washington Redskins prior to the start of the regular season, veteran defensive lineman Cullen Jenkins is set to be re-signed by the team Tuesday.

Ben Standig of Scout.com was the first to report Jenkins' return, and it was later confirmed by Mike Jones of the Washington Post. Jones later reported backup center Austin Reiter was released to make room for Jenkins.

Head coach Jay Gruden said the Redskins are planning to make a roster move Wednesday if they decide to sign Jenkins on Tuesday night, per Master Tesfatsion of the Washington Post.

The 35-year-old Jenkins will begin his 13th NFL campaign when he takes the field for Washington after previously enjoying stints with the Green Bay Packers, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants.

Jenkins spent the past three seasons with the G-Men, registering nine of his 47.5 career sacks as a member of Big Blue.

The decision to bring back the former Central Michigan standout comes on the heels of Washington's 38-16 loss the the Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday night.

In that game, Pittsburgh gained 435 total yards of offense, including 143 rushing yards from running back DeAngelo Williams.

Run defense has been an issue for the Redskins in recent seasons, as they surrendered 4.8 yards per carry in 2015, which ranked 31st in the NFL.

Jenkins has plenty of size at 6'2" and 305 pounds, he boasts a ton of experience and he is a versatile player with the ability to play anywhere along the defensive line.

Week 1 made it clear that Washington was in need of some answers in its defensive front seven, and while Jenkins may be entering the twilight of his career, his track record suggests he will have a positive impact on the Redskins' atrocious run defense.
