Stephen Curry Comments on Warriors' Goals Entering 2016-17 Season

Rob GoldbergSep 5, 2016

The Golden State Warriors won 73 games last season, but they aren't necessarily focused on improving on that total in 2016-17.

After adding Kevin Durant as a free agent in the offseason, two-time reigning MVP Stephen Curry said in an interview posted by the team's Twitter account Monday that winning the NBA title is more important than anything that happens in the regular season:

Kurt Helin of Pro Basketball Talk transcribed Curry's thoughts:

"

74 [wins] isn't really a goal. If it happens, it happens. All of our energy will be spent on getting ourselves ready for a championship run. We want to have a great regular season obviously, we don't want to have any slip-ups, but I don't think coming into the season with the goal of 74 is a good focus. It's about winning a championship.

"

Golden State became the most accomplished regular-season team in NBA history last year, posting a 73-9 record to beat the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls by one game. While Michael Jordan and Co. won the NBA title that season, the Warriors lost in the NBA Finals after holding a 3-1 series lead against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Since then, the organization acquired Durant, the 2013-14 MVP and four-time scoring champion. Adding him to a starting lineup that includes Curry, Klay Thompson and Draymond Green gives the team four of the best players in basketball.

David Solar of ESPN.com noted the Warriors' incredible odds of winning the championship next season and breaking their own regular-season record:

As a point of reference, BetOnline lists the Cavaliers with 7-2 odds to defend their title, according to Odds Shark. That means the defending NBA champions are considered less likely to win it all than the Warriors are to win 74 games.

However, it's clear Golden State will focus on winning its second championship in three seasons. If that means resting players down the stretch to keep everyone healthy and fresh for the playoffs, so be it.

The Warriors have enough talent to be favored in every game they play in 2016-17, but they need to win the Larry O'Brien Championship Trophy to validate any regular-season accomplishments.
