Williams Active vs. Celtics
Wednesday, Nov. 16
Williams said he will play against the Boston Celtics on Wednesday, per Earl K. Sneed of Mavs.com.
This comes as a bit of a surprise, as head coach Rick Carlisle said Williams was unlikely to play against the Celtics on Nov. 11, per Dwain Price of the Star-Telegram.
Williams No Stranger to Injuries
The 32-year-old has dealt with his share of ailments over the years. He hasn't crossed the 70-game threshold since playing 78 contests for the Brooklyn Nets in 2012-13.
Because Williams can't be expected to stay healthy for a full season at this stage of his career, he has not averaged more than 32.4 minutes per game in any of the last three seasons.
The Mavericks have provided Williams with an opportunity to extend his career with a solid team. He finished second on the team with 14.1 points and led the squad with 5.8 assists per game last season.
Before the injury, Williams was averaging 15.0 points and 5.8 assists while shooting 41.5 percent from the field and 41.4 percent from three.
Carlisle knows how to manage Williams, which is why the team has veteran J.J. Barea.
It's not a perfect scenario, though it is one the Mavericks had to be prepared for, given Williams' history. The team will be hoping this particular injury issue is now behind him.
