George Begins Preliminary Contract Talks
Friday, Aug. 5
According to Bob Kravitz of WTHR.com, George said that preliminary contract-extension discussions have taken place, but they remain in the early stages.
The 26-year-old forward is set to make an average of over $18.3 million per season over the next three years, per Spotrac.com.
After missing all but six games in 2014-15 due to a gruesome leg injury, George bounced back with a career year in 2015-16, averaging a personal-best 23.1 points per game to go along with 7.0 rebounds and 4.1 assists.
George also averaged 27.3 points per game in Indiana's first-round playoff series against the Toronto Raptors, and he nearly spearheaded an upset of the Eastern Conference's No. 2 seed.
The Pacers have the makings of a team that could push the Cleveland Cavaliers during the upcoming season due to the additions of Jeff Teague, Al Jefferson and Thaddeus Young around a strong core of George and Monta Ellis.
George is already a three-time All-Star, but he is a player on the rise who is trending in a direction that could see him develop into a perennial MVP contender.
The Pacers can ill afford to have a situation akin to Kevin Durant leaving the Oklahoma City Thunder, so taking a proactive approach in contract discussions with George could help them avoid that.
