Chelsea Transfer News: Latest Romelu Lukaku and Marcin Bulka Rumours

James DudkoJul 30, 2016

Chelsea have reportedly had a £57 million bid for Everton's Romelu Lukaku turned down, but they still remain "confident" of signing their former striker, who is said to want to leave the Toffees this summer.

News of the bid came from Darren Lewis of the Daily Mirror, who also detailed the ongoing state of the negotiations: "The two clubs are haggling over a fee, with the Toffees holding out for a club-record £75 million. But they have finally accepted the 23-year-old striker is determined to rejoin the club they bought him off two years ago."

Interestingly, Lewis also noted how new Blues manager Antonio Conte is determined to push through a move for Lukaku, despite already having two quality strikers at his disposal. Conte has signed Lukaku's fellow Belgium international Michy Batshuayi and "remains confident" that Diego Costa will stay at the club for at least another season.

Chelsea have already spent big to bolster their attacking options.

Conte's determination to still land Lukaku offers an indication of the attacking formation he's likely to favour at Stamford Bridge. It's looking like a two-striker setup similar to the one Conte adopted with the Italy national team.

Deploying two up top is a radical departure for Chelsea, who have pretty much lived by the lone-frontman approach since Jose Mourinho was first in charge of the Blues in 2004.

Of course, it was Mourinho who sold Lukaku during his second stint at the club. The Toffees spent £28 million to buy the Belgian in the summer of 2014.

While he'd been underused at Chelsea, Lukaku soon thrived at Everton. His lightning pace, awesome physical power, varied movement and deadly left foot helped him score 25 goals in all competitions for the Merseyside club last season, per WhoScored.com.

Yet Everton's best attempts to keep Lukaku away from Chelsea are likely to involve demanding a whopping £75 million for the prolific striker, according to a Daily Mail report from Simon Jones.

It's a lavish fee that "may be too steep even for Chelsea," per the London Evening Standard.

Chelsea Beat Barcelona to Young Goalkeeper

One deal Chelsea appear to have secured is the signing of 16-year-old Polish goalkeeper Marcin Bulka. The signing has come only after the Blues fended off competition from Barcelona, according to the Daily Mail's Jones.

Bulka's club, FCB Escola, announced the move, per Jones, who also referenced how the teenage stopper impressed Chelsea when on trial in April. Jones stated how goalkeeper coach Henrique Hilario was a driving force behind the deal, having recommended Bulka.

Hilario played a key role in the reported deal for Bulka.

The 'keeper underwent a similar trial with Barca's youth setup back in March, according to Spanish publication Sport.

Obviously, Bulka's immediate future is set to lie away from Chelsea's first team, per Jones: "It is likely Bulka will be sent on loan or continues to learn his trade with the club's youth academy."

Chelsea usually have a litany of talented prospects out on loan, and the 6'5" Bulka will have to work hard not to be lost in the wash. It won't be easy, since the Blues look set between the sticks for the foreseeable future, provided Thibaut Courtois regains his 2014/15 form and able deputy Asmir Begovic sticks around.

Courtois must get back to his best this seaosn.

Still, there's never much harm in securing a talented young prospect or two. Conte will just have to make sure more of the club's fledglings eventually get first-team chances than in the years past.

Lukaku rarely received those chances during his first stint at the club, yet if he returns, it'll be as the focal point of a new-look Chelsea capable of winning the Premier League title in Conte's first season in charge.
