Meyers Leonard Re-Signs with Trail Blazers: Latest Contract Details, Reaction
Portland Trail Blazers big man Meyers Leonard was one of the better, younger players who still had a chance to go to another team on the open market, but his incumbent squad made sure he stayed put on Sunday.
Adrian Wojnarowski of The Vertical reported Portland and Leonard, a restricted free agent, agreed to terms on a four-year, $41 million contract. Leonard's agent, Aaron Mintz, confirmed the deal, per CSNNW.com's Jason Quick.
Leonard is a legitimate 7-footer who has unusual offensive finesse to his game, evident in his 37.7 percent shooting clip from beyond the arc this past season on 228 total attempts.
The 24-year-old's size and athleticism also make him a versatile defender and a strong post presence who can help the Blazers improve upon allowing 104.3 points per contest last season, 20th in the league.
Leonard posted career-best totals in 2015-16 in averaging 21.9 minutes, 8.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.5 assists. Unfortunately, a left-shoulder injury that required surgery cut Leonard's season short, as he appeared in 61 games.
Longtime Blazers personality Mike Rice weighed in on Leonard's deal:
Given how inflated some of the contracts have been this summer, the Blazers should be thankful they managed to retain Leonard at such a relative bargain. He's only beginning to approach his full potential and has a tantalizing skill set that should make him worthy of the multiyear investment.
There's plenty of room for Leonard to make a splash in Portland's frontcourt, which got a boost with free-agent center Festus Ezeli joining the fold after shining as a reserve for the Golden State Warriors.
The fact the Trail Blazers re-signed Leonard means they will have a harder time holding on to another restricted free agent in forward Moe Harkless.
In addition to Harkless, promising swingman Allen Crabbe was an RFA who signed a four-year, $75 million offer sheet with the Brooklyn Nets last Thursday, per Wojnarowski and ESPN.com's Mike Mazzeo. As Wojnarowski reported, the Blazers matched Crabbe's offer sheet.
Although Leonard hasn't quite lived up to his billing as the 11th overall pick from the 2012 NBA draft, he showed enough this past season to merit a fair but rather modest team-friendly contract.
