Brandon Rush to Timberwolves: Latest Contract Details, Reaction

Tim DanielsJul 6, 2016

Unrestricted free agent Brandon Rush is set to join the Minnesota Timberwolves after agreeing to a one-year deal. The Timberwolves announced the signing Friday.

Chris Haynes of Cleveland.com reported the contract is worth $3.5 million on Wednesday. The veteran swingman's sports management firm, Priority Sports, confirmed the signing.

Rush is coming off a bounce-back season with the Golden State Warriors. While his numbers aren't going to jump off the page (4.2 points and 2.5 rebounds per game) because of an extremely limited role, the fact that he shot 41.4 percent from three-point range is the key.

The 31-year-old Kansas product appeared in just 33 games during the 2014-15 campaign and looked completely out of sorts when he did play. He shot just 20.4 percent from the field, including 11.1 percent from beyond the arc, as part of a forgettable season.

Although playing for the offensively loaded Warriors left him without a clear path to regular playing time, he managed to regain his shooting touch before hitting the open market. In January, he told Ethan Sherwood Strauss of ESPN.com that things were finally starting to feel right again.

"I just wasn't mentally ready last year," Rush said. "I was out of shape, I was kind of heavy. So I came into training camp in shape, back at my playing weight before the injury. And pretty much worked on my game, and everything's going the right way."

Joining the T-Wolves seems like an ideal fit on paper. He should be able to carve out a regular role behind Zach LaVine at shooting guard. Exactly how much playing time he receives will depend on having another good shooting season, which would make him a prototypical three-and-D reserve option.

His presence will also be welcome in the locker room. Minnesota is a young team on the rise with the likes of LaVine, Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins, among others. Having another battle-tested veteran like Rush to learn from can only help as it begins a climb toward playoff contention.
