WWE SmackDown Spoilers: Complete Results and Analysis for July 7

Erik BeastonJul 5, 2016

On the heels of a Monday Night Raw in which the United States of America was celebrated heavily, world heavyweight champion Dean Ambrose floored Seth Rollins with Dirty Deeds on an announce table and Enzo Amore and Big Cass pledged their allegiance to John Cena in the war with The Club, WWE rolled into Toledo, Ohio, for Tuesday night's SmackDown tapings.

What was Seth Rollins' response to his treatment at the hands of the The Lunatic Fringe?

How did The Club react to Enzo Amore and Big Cass proving them wrong by standing up for John Cena?

Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens saw their partnership in Monday's main event descend into a brawl that left both men eliminated from the contest. Would they be able to coexist in the same building without waging war?

Those questions and more were answered during Tuesday's event. Now, thanks to our friends at WrestlingInc.com, you do not have to wait until Thursday's USA Network broadcast to find out everything that went down between the ropes.

Results

  • Seth Rollins defeated Jey Uso. Dean Ambrose sat in on commentary. After the match, both men talked trash before Rollins retreated, wanting no part of the world champion.
  • Zack Ryder pinned Sheamus. After the match, Ryder told Tom Phillips in a brief promo that he wants a shot at Rusev and the United States Championship. Backstage, The Bulgarian Brute laughed off the idea of Long Island Iced Z as a credible threat.
  • Natalya attacked Becky Lynch from behind before her scheduled match could begin. She trapped The Lass Kicker in the Sharpshooter until being pulled away by referees and officials.
  • Xavier Woods partook in a sitdown interview.
  • Enzo Amore and Big Cass had a promo interrupted by The Club. An exchange of barbs followed, and officials set up a match between AJ Styles vs. Amore as a result.
  • Styles defeated Amore by pinfall.
  • Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens had a backstage confrontation.
  • WWE intercontinental champion The Miz defeated Kalisto.
  • Charlotte and Dana Brooke interrupted a Sasha Banks promo. The Boss vs. Brooke was made official for Raw.
  • Sami Zayn defeated Jericho. Owens was in on commentary and inadvertently setup the distraction that would lead to the finish. He would also flatten Zayn with the Pop-up Powerbomb to close out the show.

Analysis

After a July 4 episode of Raw that was anything but pretty, it is nice to see WWE Creative focus its attention on getting back to the logical storyline development for the feuds that will culminate at Battleground.

The Ambrose-Rollins confrontations are fun, thanks to the chemistry between them, but the absence of Roman Reigns on WWE television essentially means the feud is in a holding pattern until July 24.

The intertwining of Jericho into the Zayn vs. Owens angle is interesting and leads one to wonder exactly what Y2J's endgame is. Will he feud with one of the two coming out of the show or will he somehow be added to the match? The second option may not be appealing given the history between the former friends, but he would certainly bring a sense of unpredictability to the proceedings.

The most interesting aspect of Tuesday's show was Zack Ryder's clean victory over Sheamus and his desire for a U.S. title match against Rusev. After Monday's show, it definitely looks like Ryder's hard work, persistence and loyalty to WWE is starting to pay off. Or WWE Creative is building him up to tear him down again.

Either way, televised Ryder wins are as rare as Bigfoot, so one must cherish them when they occur.
