Dennis Schroder, Hawks Agree on New Contract: Latest Details and Reaction

Timothy RappOct 26, 2016

Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder signed a hefty extension Wednesday just one day before the team's 2016-17 regular-season opener at Philips Arena.

The 23-year-old provided a look at himself signing his new deal:

According to Marc Stein of ESPN.com, the deal is for four years and $70 million, adding $62 million will be guaranteed for a per-year average of $15.5 million.

Schroder averaged 11.0 points, 4.4 assists and 2.6 rebounds in 20.3 minutes per game in 2015-16 while serving as Jeff Teague's backup. Though he started just six games for Atlanta, he played a vital role in the team's push to the postseason.

The Hawks traded Teague to the Indiana Pacers this offseason, however, so Schroder is poised to take over as the team's starting point guard.

He will try to lead an attack that still features Kyle Korver and Paul Millsap, with Dwight Howard replacing the departed Al Horford. The Hawks could also get solid contributions from first-round picks Taurean Prince and DeAndre' Bembry.

Still, the major story will be the play of Schroder, who is getting his biggest chance to shine. He's increased his scoring, rebounding and assists in all three of his professional seasons and finished ninth in Sixth Man of the Year voting this past campaign.

The Hawks selected the German 17th overall in the 2013 NBA draft to eventually become the team's starter at point guard. He's young, full of potential and already has valuable postseason experience. Atlanta moved Teague to cut salary, but having Schroder waiting in the wings played a huge part in pulling the trigger on that deal.

And this extension is yet another indication that the Hawks are committed to Schroder as a key component of the organization for many years to come.
