Lewis Was Explosive Before Knee Injury
Lewis' 2015 season was cut short when he suffered a torn ACL in November, when he was on pace to have a strong first season with New England. Through seven games, he rushed for 234 yards and two touchdowns and caught 36 passes for 388 yards and another two scores.
A number of factors have worked against Lewis and limited him in his NFL career. He was stuck behind LeSean McCoy during his first two years with the Philadelphia Eagles, and after getting traded to the Cleveland Browns, he fractured his fibula, which ruled him out for the entire 2013 season.
The Indianapolis Colts signed him and quickly released him in September 2014, and the Patriots added him on a reserve/future deal that December. Just as he appeared to be getting things on track, Lewis injured his knee.
Any prolonged absence would hurt the Patriots as a whole too. New England often uses a running back-by-committee approach and still has LeGarrette Blount, James White and Brandon Bolden. However, Lewis showed promise in 2015 and adds another dimension to the passing attack with his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield.
