Tyronn Lue Told LeBron James to Pick Up Pace After Game 1 Loss in NBA Finals
Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Tyronn Lue wants to change up the game plan heading into Game 2 of the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors on Sunday.
More specifically, he wants LeBron James to speed it up on offense.
"I just told LeBron I need him to play faster," Lue said, per Brian Windhorst of ESPN.com. "I need him to pick up the pace for us offensively, getting the ball out and just beginning to play faster."
The Cavaliers were held below 90 points for the second time this postseason in Game 1, which they lost 104-89 on Thursday at Oracle Arena. Cleveland was also called for two shot-clock violations in the first half, which prompted Lue to hold a long film session Friday, according to Windhorst.
Cleveland took a 68-67 lead with two minutes, 12 seconds remaining in the third quarter after a James layup, but that was its last lead of the ballgame. Golden State closed the contest by outscoring Cleveland 37-21 in the final 14 minutes.
"[The Warriors] make you stagnant and make you play one-on-one basketball because that's all you can get," Lue said, per Windhorst. "So if we pick up the pace and play with a faster tempo offensively, I think we'll be fine."
James understands what his coach wants out of him as his team heads into Sunday's crucial contest, per Windhorst:
"Coach has given us a game plan, and we need to execute it. If coach feels like we need to play faster, then we do. We've got to push the tempo a little bit more offensively, see if we can get down, get some easy baskets and get to the flow of our game. It's been a good thing for us throughout the whole season once Coach Lue took over, so we need to do that.
"
The Cavaliers' offensive struggles were a combination of stout Golden State defense and a lack of ball movement.
Going point for point with the Warriors is a tall task, but Cleveland proved it can hang with Golden State during the third quarter. The next task is to do it for 48 minutes.
