John Elway Talks Brock Osweiler's Decision to Skip Broncos' White House Visit

Brian MarronJun 2, 2016

Brock Osweiler will not join his former Denver Broncos teammates at the White House on Monday, and general manager John Elway seems to be OK with that.

The Houston Texans quarterback is one of two former Broncos who declined to take part in the Super Bowl celebration with President Barack Obama, but Elway is focusing on the guys who will be there, per 9News' Mike Klis.

“That’s Brock’s choice, so all the other guys from my understanding are going to be there, which will be great,” Elway said Thursday. “We get everybody back together and celebrate the great season that we had last year, so it will be fun.

Arizona Cardinals guard Evan Mathis is the other former Broncos player who will not be in attendance. His new team is conducting physicals that day, per Klis. Omar Bolden, Aaron Brewer, Ryan Harris, Malik Jackson and Danny Trevathan are no longer with Denver but are expected to join the organization Monday.

Osweiler gave his reasoning in a statement, per NFL Network's James Palmer:

Osweiler started seven games for Denver last season before Peyton Manning reclaimed the job and led the team to its Super Bowl triumph. The 25-year-old threw for 1,967 yards, 10 touchdowns and six interceptions on the year.

He has appeared in only 21 games in his career, but he showed enough to convince the Texans to give him a four-year, $72 million deal in the offseason, with $37 million guaranteed.

Osweiler will be under pressure to make good on that contract, so it makes sense that he wants to attend his first OTAs with his new team.

Having Osweiler at the White House could also be a distraction, since he left the team with a difficult quarterback situation. First-round pick Paxton Lynch, Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian are the three signal-callers on Denver's roster.

Osweiler's decision to abstain from attending may work best for everyone.
