Allen Undergoing Surgery

Tuesday, Sept. 27

Michael Gehlken of the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Allen is going under the knife Tuesday.

Allen Pens Letter to Fans

Wednesday, Sept. 14

The Chargers provided Allen's message to fans on Wednesday:

"

This was tough. I felt numb inside when it happened. Right now I'm not feeling as bad, but this is obviously tough. I'm just waiting on surgery, which I'll have next week.

More than anything, I want to say thank you. Thank you for your prayers and everything you've said. It's beyond words. Having you behind me is what has helped keep my spirits up.

Now it's time for all of us to get behind our boys.

I'll be just like you, watching them make a run for it. Whenever they need advice, I'm going to be there for them. For now, I'm telling them to focus on what they can control. There is nothing we can do about me going down, so they have to move on. That's what I told Phil yesterday. You can't do anything to fix what happened, so go out there now and make some noise.

It's going to be tough to not play for a whole season, but it is going to make me tougher mentally.

I'm going to come back stronger than ever.

I'm more motivated than ever.

I can't wait.

I'm going to be back, so don't you worry about me.

"

Severity of Allen's Injury Revealed

Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported that Allen's other knee ligaments are intact despite the torn ACL, noting that it will make rehab "a small bit easier."

Allen Placed on IR

Monday, Sept. 12

Ricky Henne of Chargers.com confirmed the roster move, noting that Allen was officially diagnosed with an ACL injury.

Allen Comments on Injury

Sunday, Sept. 11

Allen posted on Instagram following the Chargers' 33-27 loss to the Chiefs with the following caption:

"

Look that fear/obstacle/trial/situation in the eye and tell it... You won't stop me! You can't stop me! I was built for this! Sometimes we need things like this not because we are [too] high of ourselves but simply because God has a set plan. Head high! Smiles up! Back to the lab. #13strong #S13YER #boltup

Allen Continues to Struggle to Stay Healthy

Allen had six catches for 63 yards prior to the injury.

Any injury, let alone an ACL tear, would have been concerning for Allen, who appeared in only eight games last season after playing in 15 contests in 2013 and 14 in 2014. He suffered a lacerated kidney in Week 8 against the Baltimore Ravens and was out for the remainder of 2015.

Outside of long-term durability worries, the Chargers will struggle without Allen on the field because he is their go-to wide receiver as they look to make the playoffs for the first time since the 2013 season.

Allen broke onto the scene with 1,046 receiving yards and eight touchdowns as a rookie in 2013, but he was held to 783 yards and four scores in 2014. He was on pace for another impressive campaign in 2015 before he was injured, tallying 725 yards and four touchdowns.

The Chargers will likely turn Travis Benjamin's way more often when Philip Rivers drops back to pass. The speedy Benjamin posted 966 receiving yards and five touchdown catches last season for the 3-13 Cleveland Browns and has the talent to serve as a primary option if necessary.

San Diego also has future Hall of Fame tight end Antonio Gates as an outlet for Rivers in the red zone and on third down.
