New Myles Garrett Trade Details Reveal Surprising Stipulation for Draft Pick Rams Sent Browns
The Cleveland Browns provided some protection for themselves in their trade that sent star edge rusher Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams.
According to Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com, the 2029 third-round pick that the Browns received from the Rams is a conditional selection that would be elevated to a first-round pick if Garrett is traded to another AFC North team.
The Rams pulled off the biggest blockbuster deal of the offseason by sending rising star edge rusher Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and the conditional 2029 third-rounder to the Browns in exchange for Garrett. If Los Angeles chooses to deal him away before 2029, it would be wise to find a trade partner outside of the AFC North.
Garrett is motivated to help lead the Rams back to a Super Bowl title, though he made it clear that he didn't "take my time in Cleveland for granted" despite the lack of team success during his tenure.
"It just breaks down to the timing of everything," Garrett said during his introductory press conference on Tuesday, per ESPN's Sarah Barshop. "What does it realistically look like to be a winner now? And to have an opportunity to do that immediately, that was an opportunity that was just too difficult to pass up. And I always have love in my heart for Cleveland the city, the community and all the players and everything else. But the opportunity to come here, have an immediate and profound impact on this team, it was something I just had to move forward with."
At 30 years old, Garrett has a long career left ahead of him, so the Rams should be looking to keep the two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year in the fold for as long as possible while maintaining their status as a top title contender in the NFC.
