Jalen Ramsey, Jaguars Agree to Contract: Latest Details, Comments and Reaction

Matt FitzgeraldMay 22, 2016

The Jacksonville Jaguars reached an agreement with the 2016 NFL draft's No. 5 overall pick, Jalen Ramsey, on Sunday.

Although the Jaguars did not reveal details of the agreement, ESPN's Michael DiRocco reported, "The four-year deal is worth $23.3 million with a $15.1 million signing bonus."

Ramsey had a magnificent three-year tenure at Florida State, where he showed uncommon versatility and succeeded wherever he lined up. He started at free safety and cornerback as a true freshman, at a linebacker-safety hybrid position as a sophomore and was a pure corner during his junior campaign, per CBSSports.com's Rob Rang.

It was therefore little surprise Ramsey was regarded among the elite players in the 2016 class. One could even argue Jacksonville was fortunate to land Ramsey at fifth overall, as two teams ahead of the Jaguars—the San Diego Chargers and Dallas Cowboys—had needs to justify acquiring him.

Considering Jacksonville signed former Cleveland Browns standout Tashaun Gipson to play free safety, it stands to reason the Jags will most often deploy Ramsey as a cornerback.

With the ability to cover outside or inside the slot, immense hitting power, a 6'1", 209-pound frame and a 4.41-second 40-yard dash, Ramsey has a skill set that makes him a movable piece in an intriguing Jags defense on paper.

Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley, a former defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, may finally have the talent to work with to fully execute his system.

Last year's first-round pick, edge player Dante Fowler Jr., will be back after missing all of 2015 with a torn ACL. Jacksonville landed defensive end Malik Jackson as a prized free agent and also got UCLA linebacker Myles Jack in the second round of the draft at No. 36.

Provided the knee injury that caused Jack's draft stock to plummet checks out, Jack and Ramsey could combine to have the most impact among a team's first two draft picks in the entire league.

The process of officially assembling the Jaguars' loaded defensive core has become slightly expedited now that Ramsey's contract is locked in.
