Brandon Browner to Seahawks: Contract Details, Comments, Reaction

Joseph ZuckerApr 17, 2016

Brandon Browner has returned to the Seattle Seahawks, announcing his agreement with the franchise on Instagram:

The Seahawks officially announced the deal on April 18.

The veteran cornerback reportedly agreed to terms on a deal with the team on April 17, per ESPN's Adam Schefter, who reported the contract is a one-year deal. On Thursday, Tom Pelissero of USA Today reported the contract is worth $760,000 with $0 guaranteed.

After spending a few years in the CFL, Browner signed with the Seahawks in 2011 and played with the team for three years. During that span, he started 36 games, intercepting 10 passes and making 117 combined tackles.

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman commented on Browner's return after the news broke:

Kam Chancellor also welcomed Browner back to the organization:

The 31-year-old's stock began declining in 2013. He played only eight games after earning an indefinite suspension from the league. The NFL also suspended him for the first four games of the 2014 season.

Browner then struggled with the New England Patriots in 2014, and Pro Football Focus graded him as the worst qualified cornerback in the NFL in 2015. The New Orleans Saints released him a year after signing him to a three-year deal.

At the NFL owners' meetings, Saints head coach Sean Payton attempted to absolve Browner of some blame for his poor performance, per ESPN.com's Mike Triplett:

"

"You know, I asked the same question. Look, this guy just won a Super Bowl in [New England].

I think there's a handful of reasons. I think we weren't good enough overall as a defense," said Payton, who specifically mentioned the defensive front, the pass rush and some missed assignments in coverage by linebackers that may have looked to the untrained eye like Browner was to blame.

"It's that perfect storm," Payton said. "And the surrounding parts for us weren't as strong as they needed to be."

"

Triplett noted, however, that Browner also collected 24 penalties, which, according to ESPN Stats & Info, was the most by a player since at least 2001.

In an April 6 Instagram post, Browner said he played last year on a torn MCL:

Despite his issues in 2015, Browner could be a shrewd addition for the Seahawks. He's already well-acquainted with the team's defensive scheme, and he has a strong rapport with his teammates in the secondary.

Plus, unless Sherman or Jeremy Lane goes down, Seattle won't need him to play a starting role. NFL.com's Chris Trapasso believes Browner could thrive in his new surroundings:

A return to his 2011 Pro Bowl season would be unrealistic, but Browner should become a productive member of the Seahawks defense once again, especially since he should be fully healthy for Week 1 of the regular season, a luxury not afforded to him last year.
