Spurs Become 1st Team to Start 38-0 at Home in a Season
With Wednesday's 100-92 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans, the San Antonio Spurs became the first team in NBA history to win the first 38 home games of a season, according to Elias Sports Bureau (via ESPN Stats & Info).
Though they did more than enough to earn the record, the Spurs weren't at their best Wednesday night, allowing the injury-ravaged Pelicans to keep the game competitive behind double-digit scoring performances from seven different players.
With Anthony Davis, Ryan Anderson, Jrue Holiday, Eric Gordon, Tyreke Evans and Norris Cole all sidelined by injuries, reserve center/forward Alexis Ajinca led the way for New Orleans with 18 points and nine rebounds in 32 minutes.
The Spurs, meanwhile, were bailed out by 20 points (on just 10 field-goal attempts) from guard Manu Ginobili, who returned from a two-game absence to record his third 20-point outing of the season.
San Antonio now needs just three more wins to complete a perfect season at home, but it still seems worse than a 50-50 proposition, as the games are scheduled against the Toronto Raptors (50-24), Golden State Warriors (68-7) and Oklahoma City Thunder (52-23).
The Warriors, of course, are also undefeated at home, with their 37-0 start tying the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for second-best in NBA history.
Golden State has a better chance at achieving home perfection, as the team clearly wants to break the 1995-96 Bulls' record of 72 wins, whereas the Spurs have already started resting players to prepare for the playoffs.
