Rivers Comments on Pierce's Injury
Monday, March 28
Head coach Doc Rivers said Pierce's injury would not end his season, per Ben Bolch of the Los Angeles Times. However, Rivers did say Pierce would be "out for a while," according to ESPN.com's J.A. Adande.
Clippers PR provided the following statement to Jay King of MassLive.com: "I don't think it's too bad. Dodged a bullet, it looks like."
Pierce Has Been Reliable for Clippers
Pierce missed three games in mid-March while he nursed a toe injury, but his only other absences this season have been scheduled maintenance days.
A year after providing stability from beyond the arc for the Washington Wizards en route to a second-round playoff exit against the Atlanta Hawks, Pierce has struggled to find a rhythm with the Clippers.
In 66 games to date, Pierce is averaging a career-worst 6.1 points per game while shooting just 36.4 percent from the field in 18 minutes a night. Most alarming is that Pierce has converted just 30.7 percent of his catch-and-shoot three-pointers after drilling 40.5 percent of those attempts a year ago, according to NBA.com.
"His minutes have gone down each year over the last three or four years," Rivers said in February, per the Press-Telegram's Robert Morales. "Usually, statistically, especially guys who play a lot, when their minutes start dwindling, their field-goal percentage struggles a little bit, too."
