Gasol Shut Down, Undergoes Testing
Wednesday, April 13
K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune reported on Monday that Gasol would undergo an MRI and miss the regular-season finale against the Philadelphia 76ers.
On Wednesday, Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg told reporters he did not know the results of the MRI.
Gasol Continues to Produce at a High Level
Gasol has been producing a solid double-double average of 16.5 points and 11 rebounds for a second consecutive season in Chicago. The 35-year-old is a uniquely skilled frontcourt player capable of taking over games on occasion even at this late juncture of his career.
After appearing in 78 games during the 2014-15 campaign, Gasol has suited up for the vast majority of contests for the Bulls this season. Despite a slight reduction in minutes, though, a faster brand of basketball has led to the occasional stint on the sidelines for the veteran.
The Bulls have a lot of finessed players like Gasol in their big man rotation, but no one other than Gasol is accustomed to playing the 5. This is where a healthy Joakim Noah would be invaluable to plug in.
Nikola Mirotic is more of a stretch 4, as is the case with talented rookie Bobby Portis. Taj Gibson, could have been an option for the Bulls, but he was also shut down for the year, per Johnson.
However, with the Bulls eliminated from the postseason, the injuries to Gasol and Gibson give Hoiberg time to evaluate his roster as Chicago looks to next year.
