WWE Week in Review: Who Received B/R's Top Awards for Week of Feb. 26

Ryan DilbertFeb 26, 2016

AJ Styles and Dean Ambrose were among the WWE stars who made sure Fastlane wasn't just a forgettable pit stop before WrestleMania.

WWE featured Styles on everything from the latest pay-per-view to SmackDown's main event. He looked excellent at every step.

Elsewhere, a number of wrestlers made fans take notice.

Ambrose helped compose the top match of 2016 so far. A monster ruled at NXT. Tag team champions garnered heat outside of the ring.

From the top wrestler to the top match, let's dive into the best WWE had to offer as February wrapped up.

B/R's Top Wrestler of the Week: AJ Styles

1 of 5

AJ Styles was everywhere this week, nailing every chance WWE offered him.

He kicked things off with an excellent match against Chris Jericho at Fastlane. There were some sloppy moments, but the two wrestlers looked to do everything they could to steal the show.

The Phenomenal One then teamed with Jericho for a surprisingly good tag team match against Heath Slater and Curtis Axel on Monday's Raw. He was then a key cog in the six-man tag match that closed Thursday's SmackDown. And while he was a little too eager to praise WWE, he came off as likable in an interview with Michael Cole. This was the most personality he's been allowed to show thus far.

Throughout, Styles looked like a star.

Hopefully, WWE recognizes that and gets him a prime spot on the WrestleMania card. Match by match, he's done well to quell any doubts about him making it on this big stage.

B/R's Standout NXT Star of the Week: Nia Jax

2 of 5

Bayley spent much of Wednesday's main event on NXT on the ring apron. That forced her less-proven peers to step up. Nia Jax did just that.

She was convincingly fearsome and the star of the bout. When she clubbed Carmella or roared in the ring, it was clear that she has become more and more comfortable as a monster.

While Eva Marie looks lost at times and Carmella is improving but still raw, Jax is picking up the mat game at an impressive rate. She's the foundation of the alliance with Marie. With continued growth, she promises to be the foundation of the women's division, too.

B/R's Top Moment of the Week: Shane McMahon Returns to Raw

3 of 5

Monday's Raw kicked off with a massive surprise—Shane McMahon coming back to WWE for the first time since 2009.

That curveball led to an electric response from the crowd. It gave Raw that anything-can-happen feel it has been missing of late.

McMahon nailed his promo, too. He was fun but focused, not rusty from his time away from the spotlight. As Kenny Herzog of Rolling Stone wrote of the moment, "Shane-O Mac exuded more than just charisma. It was clear he was having a blast, and therefore so did we."

Strangely enough, this resulted in WWE booking a nutty match in the form of Undertaker vs. McMahon at WrestleMania. That decision is a faulty one, but bringing back McMahon to shake up the WWE landscape was brilliant.

B/R's Top Under-the-Radar Move: The Revival Ambushes Enzo Amore

4 of 5

Scott Dawson and Dash Wilder (now known as The Revival) ambushed Enzo Amore in the parking lot. The tag champs proceeded to pummel the fan favorite.

This is a simple, effective throwback angle that WWE needs to deliver more often. As Cageside Seats' Sean Rueter wrote, "This is a cool piece of business. Everyone—especially 'Zo—does a pretty convincing job of making this look like a shoot street fight."

The heinous act made The Revival look more vicious and cutthroat. It provides fuel for this feud to keep going strong. And it's something other than the overdone distraction finish or run-in during a match.

The New Day could use booking like this to go along with the trio's goofy antics.

B/R's Top Match of the Week: Brock Lesnar vs. Dean Ambrose vs. Roman Reigns

5 of 5

In a battle for the right to face Triple H at WrestleMania, Brock Lesnar, Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns all delivered stellar performances. Everyone thrived in a hard-hitting, chaos-fueled showdown.

Lesnar was his usual monstrous self. Ambrose and Reigns teamed up to take down The Beast Incarnate in a flashback to the days of The Shield. Ambrose was captivating as a man on the edge, wailing on everyone with a steel chair and stepping up to Lesnar with no fear.

Dave Meltzer of F4WOnline called it a "crazy great match." It was exactly that and the best bout of the young year.

Some fans have pushed back against the result. Reigns winning, though, was expected. And it not only sets up the clash against The Game that WWE has been building for months, but it also opened the door for Lesnar vs. Ambrose at WrestleMania.

If Fastlane is any indication, that contest is going to be a fascinating, violent ride.
