Titus O'Neil's Suspension, Daniel Bryan and More from the Professional Mailbag
Going into this week's mailbag, I thought Daniel Bryan's retirement would be the story of the week. I was wrong.

Modern-Day Dream Matches 💭

Most Likely Backlash Heel/Face Turns 🎭
Just about every controversial story comes with its share of backlash, especially in pro wrestling. Fans seem to be siding with Titus O'Neil—and rightfully so—but unfortunately, he's just not a big enough star or Internet darling to create a visceral "you screwed Titus" movement. At best, I see chants for O'Neil replacing "JBL" chants when fans get bored during matches.
I actually agree with WWE punishing O'Neil for inexplicably thinking it was OK to roughhouse with the boss on national television. But a 60-day suspension, according to Chris Perez of the New York Post, that will cause him to miss WrestleMania is ridiculous. O'Neil basically received the same punishment as a second wellness violation, which is an issue far more important than any awkward scuffle between boss and talent.
WWE could have made its point clear by sending O'Neil home for a week or two then writing a memo to talent about professionalism. But as a first-time offender who has arguably the best character of anybody on the roster, O'Neil is being overpunished.
Unprofessional Wrestling
McMahon does not like being shown up if it's not in the script. That exchange was the last thing fans saw on television, so an otherwise feel-good moment was compromised with questions of why McMahon was getting into it with O'Neil. He had to respond somehow.
There's a fine line between professionalism and professional wrestling. These are over-the-top characters who constantly goof around on social media to keep themselves busy during their endless travel schedule. It sounds like this behavior simply bled onto television. Per Bryan Alvarez of F4WOnline.com (h/t WrestlingInc.com), McMahon was sending a message to the locker room to act professionally.
This was described as "one guy messing around too many" after a pattern of free-wheeling behavior on the job. It sounds like McMahon was concerned that if O'Neil wasn't punished, more WWE Superstars and Divas would take liberties with the rules.
Question of the Week: Daniel Bryan Overrated?
Absolutely not. It's amazing how Bryan's relatively brief career in WWE earned him the right to have an entire show dedicated to him upon retirement. This is an honor previously reserved for WWE Hall of Famers such as Edge, Shawn Michaels and Ric Flair.
Bryan was hailed as the best wrestler in the world before he entered WWE, so had his WWE career flopped, he'd still be a Hall of Fame-caliber talent. But it can easily be argued that Bryan's WWE career was better and more entertaining than anything he did as the American Dragon.
Arguably the most likable WWE Superstar in history, the "Yes!" Movement hijacked a WrestleMania build like nothing seen before and vaulted him into the main event.
Bryan's story is similar to that of Magnum T.A., who seemed destined for superstardom before his career was cut short due to a serious injury.
Bryan's WWE run can be considered a story of "what could have been," but after a fairy-tale ending at WrestleMania XXX, was there any way it could have been any better?
Card Subject to Change?
I'm not worried about WrestleMania delivering in the ring. More times than not, WrestleMania lives past expectations. I am worried, however, about the buildup to WrestleMania 32.
For an event being considered as the biggest WrestleMania of all time, very little is being done to build an entire card. I feel like WWE is in a holding period, hoping Randy Orton and even John Cena can somehow return from injury in time for the event.
The only match I'm confident will happen is Triple H vs. Roman Reigns, and with fan resentment toward Reigns always an issue, it's not out of the realm of possibility that WWE caves yet again.
Uncertainty toward buildups make for more exciting television, as fans simply have to tune in to see how things unfold. Still, time is not on WWE's side, as WrestleMania is just one Titus O'Neil suspension away.
