Demetris Robertson to California: Golden Bears Land 5-Star WR Prospect

Adam WellsMay 1, 2016

Superstar athletes are hard to come by in football, so California is thrilled that prized recruit Demetris Robertson chose to come to Berkeley.

Andrew Holleran of College Spun tweeted out video of Robertson making his announcement:

California head coach Sonny Dykes shared his enthusiasm about Robertson's decision on Twitter:

As for what makes Robertson so coveted, 247Sports has him listed as the No. 1 wide receiver and a 5-star recruit in the 2016 class. He's also the No. 3 player from Georgia and the No. 14 overall recruit.

Diving deeper into the scouting report, Barton Simmons of 247Sports noted Robertson has the speed and athleticism to play all over the field:

"

You can say a prospect has twitch – and Demetris Robertson certainly does – but sometimes it's nice to have the proof. For Robertson his 10.4 100 meter time, 21.3 200 meter time and 23-foot long jump are all the proof you need that the kid is a sudden, explosive athlete that can play just about any skill position he wants.

"

You can see elements of all those gifts on display, as well as Robertson's ability to make plays in traffic, in this video from SB Nation:

Versatility is critical in this era of football, as many players are able to take on multiple roles in an impactful way. Robertson is giving his new team options in the best possible way.

ESPN.com lists him as a wide receiver, though its scouting report also says he has "running back-like open-field skills."

Dykes should have no problem taking advantage of Robertson's diverse skill set. He created a wide-open aerial attack that saw six players catch at least 40 passes last season.

However, those receiving stats came with Jared Goff playing quarterback. Goff was just taken No. 1 overall in the 2016 NFL draft, leading Dan Wolken of USA Today to wonder what Robertson is thinking:

Cal didn't have a great 2016 recruiting class before Robertson committed, and they currently rank seventh out of 12 Pac-12 teams, per 247Sports

But perhaps Robertson is hoping to be the face of Cal football and show recruits around the country that it is a school worth attending to develop football skills and compete for titles in the near future.

Given Robertson's wide frame and potential to overpower defensive backs, he certainly gives Dykes and the Cal coaching staff a lot to play with.

Regardless of why Robertson decided to join a rebuilding California program, he's a game-changing talent who can make an impact right away with his new team.
