Brian Kelly Explains How AI Is Helping Him Prepare for HC Interviews After LSU Firing

Joseph ZuckerMay 6, 2026

Former LSU coach Brian Kelly is embracing some modern methods as he prepares for a possible return to college football.

Kelly told USA Today's John Brice and Blake Toppmeyer he has leaned on the Claude AI assistant to better understand his approach to a prospective interview.

"Every day, I'm trying to do my due diligence using Claude and AI, asking questions to build some of those answers that I think can be helpful for me as I get in front of an athletic director," he said (via On3's Alex Byington).

Kelly asserted his belief that coaches will increasingly come to use AI as part of their job.

"But there's some interesting things that I've laid down relative to recruiting, profiling, transfer portal, there's a lot of work you can do," he said. "And I think it's going to have to be part of the next iteration in coaching. You're going to have to utilize those tools."

There's no guarantee Kelly will get another crack at coaching. Jimbo Fisher hasn't returned to a sideline after Texas A&M fired him in November 2023. The same goes for Kelly's predecessor in Baton Rouge, Ed Orgeron.

The way his LSU tenure unfolded raised some questions about how the 62-year-old can fare without having the right infrastructure around him. From the jump, he looked like a bad fit with the Tigers and that proved true.

Other schools could have similar concerns.

Should he find himself in a room with an athletic director or major boosters intended to bankroll his hire, Kelly will at least be well drilled on his pitch.
