Sky Sports Offer 'Proof' That Geoff Hurst's World Cup Goal Crossed the Line
It's one of the oldest debates in football: Did Geoff Hurst's second goal at the 1966 World Cup final actually cross the line?
As the 50th anniversary of the game approaches, the folks at Sky Sports' Monday Night Football have taken it upon themselves to settle the issue—and they believe the goal was legitimate.
Using EA Sports technology and Opta statistics, Sky's Ed Chamberlin and Jamie Carragher have offered images to suggest the ball was clearly over the line.
The former Liverpool defender also argued that Roger Hunt's reaction is telling—rather than try to put the ball in the net, he turns to celebrate:
"That is a fantastic touch from Hurst," said Carragher. "And I think what is also telling is the reaction of Roger Hunt.
"You would expect him to be putting it in, but he is wheeling away."
Sky's evidence appears compelling, but the debate about this goal is likely to keep raging on.
