Ashley Stroehlein of WBTV relayed the update.
Whittaker saw limited action during the first three-quarters of the season. Then a foot injury suffered by starter Jonathan Stewart against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 13 thrust the 27-year-old backup into a more high-profile role for a while.
The Texas product spent time with the Arizona Cardinals, San Diego Chargers and Cleveland Browns before landing with the Panthers in 2014. He's remained mostly durable but did battle through an ankle problem that extended into the postseason.
If Whittaker is forced to miss time, fullback Mike Tolbert figures to receive most of the extra playing time in the Carolina backfield behind Stewart.
It's not a major setback for the Panthers, but losing any player is notable as they try to chase down a Super Bowl title.
