Ryan Mallett's Ex-Teammates Discuss Former Texans QB's Struggles
The Houston Texans released backup quarterback Ryan Mallett on Tuesday after a weekend in which he was late to Saturday's team meetings and missed their charter flight to Miami for a Week 7 matchup against the Dolphins, per Tania Ganguli of ESPN.com. But Mallett is still the talk of the locker room.
According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, some of Mallett's former teammates are still trying to digest what he did. One did so anonymously:
"Ryan clearly just didn't get it. How can you miss the flight? That's ridiculous and disrespectful to just not show up when everyone else is here ready to go.
That makes you question whether he cared at all about what we're trying to do, or what kind of problems he's dealing with. He's immature.

Mallett appeared in six games in 2015, starting four of them as the Texans flip-flopped between him and Brian Hoyer. He threw three touchdowns and four interceptions, completing just over 53 percent of his passes.
But this wasn't the first time he had been tardy. Per Wilson, Mallett missed the team bus in Richmond, Virginia, where the Texans had a joint practice with the Washington Redskins, and woke up late for a practice during training camp shortly after Houston named Hoyer the starter.
Head coach Bill O'Brien wanted to cut Mallett before the Week 7 game, but general manager Rick Smith talked him out of it, according to Wilson.
Mallett's actions were a concern for another teammate.
"With him being late so much and how he acted sometimes, it definitely makes you wonder what's going on with him," he said, per Wilson. "It makes you worry about him. Obviously, something like this makes it tough for him to get on with another team. He's got to make some changes or his football career will be over."
Curtis Crabtree of ProFootballTalk commented on Mallett's future given his problems with the Texans: "A player can’t help any team if he’s not showing up when asked. It shows a lack of dedication to his job and commitment to his teammates. That lack of drive could make it difficult for Mallett to find another team willing to offer him a roster spot anytime soon."
Danny Kanell of ESPN also lamented Mallett's decisions:
For a quarterback who has been nothing more than a backup for the first five seasons of his career, Mallett's behavior will make it difficult for other NFL teams to take a chance on him.
And even if he does latch on somewhere, he has to adjust his attitude, or else his teammates may second-guess going to war with him.
