WWE SmackDown Results: Winners, Grades, Reaction and Highlights from October 29
Every week on Bleacher Report, I take an in-depth look at WWE SmackDown to recap the action, offer analysis and grade the matches, segments and anything else that takes place on the show, as well as make a few predictions for future events.
Hell in a Cell had some great action, but the way the pay-per-view ended was strange to say the least. After the Undertaker was abducted by the Wyatt Family, Kane suffered the same fate the following night on Raw.
We also saw the return of Alberto Del Rio at Hell in a Cell. He defeated John Cena in his first match back to become the new United States champion.
It felt like Sunday's event saw the end of several big feuds, which means new storylines must be built up before Survivor Series in November.
Let's take a look at everything that happened on this week's SmackDown.
Opening Segment
1 of 8The show opened with a backstage promo from Bray Wyatt. He talked about the Undertaker and Kane for a bit, and he even had the Dead Man's hat and the Demon's mask.
He threw down a challenge for anyone to step up and face his three minions in a six-man tag match. Each member of the Wyatt clan had a chance to say a few words, but Wyatt did most of the heavy lifting.
When we went to the arena, Roman Reigns came down through the crowd and talked about how his only goal has been to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship.
It didn't take long for Kevin Owens to come out and interrupt Reigns to complain about how Reigns beat him on Raw to earn a title shot.
A referee seemingly appeared out of nowhere and this turned into a match. Having a fresh combination in Owens and Reigns was a smart way to start the show. Outside of the Fatal 4-Way match on Raw, we have never seen these two fight, so it was a nice change from the repetitiveness we get on a weekly basis.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- Wyatt's use of the Undertaker's hat and Kane's mask helped his promo seem more serious.
- Even though he is the intercontinental champion, it's great to see Owens continue to associate with main event players.
- Owens and Reigns could have a great feud because they are both so intense.
Roman Reigns vs. Kevin Owens
2 of 8For the first several minutes, Reigns was taking Owens to school. He used his power to control the action, but Owens' experience eventually came into play and he took over.
The pace was relatively slow throughout most of the match, but it didn't hinder the performance. They were more focused on selling and telling a story than how quickly they went from move to move.
After becoming frustrated with Reigns' dominance, Owens took his ball (title) and went home. While it's good to have a heel take the low road once in a while, it seems like Owens does it way too often.
Yes, he is a heel, but he is better suited to being a bully than a coward. Taking another clean loss to Reigns wouldn't help him, but there are other ways the ending could have been booked.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- It's easy to forget how strong Owens is because he doesn't have any muscle definition. To hit a fallaway slam against the barricade on a guy the size of Reigns is not easy.
- Owens could teach a class at the Performance Center about how to talk trash during a match.
- Owens' superkicks look like love taps compared to those performed by Dolph Ziggler and Alberto Del Rio.
Dudleys vs. Lucha Dragons vs. Ascension vs. Sheamus and King Barrett
3 of 8After unsuccessfully challenging the New Day for the Tag Team Championships for a third time at Hell in a Cell, the Dudley Boyz were put into a Fatal 4-Way tag match.
Before the bell rang, Big E and Kofi Kingston came out with unicorn horns strapped to their heads. They said it was for Halloween, but they will probably keep using the horns while their shirt has a unicorn on it.
It's hard to have a crowded match such as this be anything more than a series of random spots, but the four teams involved did a decent job of making sure things made sense.
While it was every team for themselves, it definitely felt like the heels were working together against the babyfaces, which means this easily could have been an eight-man tag match instead of a Fatal 4-Way.
As expected, all hell broke loose and everyone came into the ring at once. The Dudleys chased Sheamus and King Barrett up the ramp while the Lucha Dragons picked up the win over the Ascension.
Matches such as this are better for the live crowd than those sitting at home, but overall, it was a fun contest that helped showcase 10 different people at once.
Grade: B-
Notes and Highlights
- Anyone who regularly reads these recaps knows I have been pushing for Barrett and Sheamus to become a real tag team for a long time, and it looks like WWE is finally pulling the trigger.
- Is WWE going to sell those unicorn horns at merchandise stands?
- Big E and Kingston were using weird voices on commentary. It was funny at first but got old fast.
The Miz vs. Dolph Ziggler
4 of 8Since this was a holiday episode of SmackDown, it was inevitable we would see a themed Street Fight. This time, it was called a Trick or Treat Street Fight.
Matches such as these are meant to be fun for the crowd and nothing else. There was no storyline behind it, and nobody was going to gain anything from a win.
Luckily for WWE, the Miz and Ziggler know how to have fun in the ring. Sure, there was some brutality with the Kendo stick and steel chair, but most of what we saw was comedic in nature.
Ziggler picked up the win with a rollup, but he was favoring his knee after the Miz worked it over. This led to Tyler Breeze taking advantage of the situation and attacking Ziggler to continue their feud.
Breeze showed a lot of aggression, and that is going to help him become more than just another stuck-up pretty boy.
This segment produced a decent match and some storyline development, and that is more than we can say for most of what we see every week on SmackDown.
Grade: B
Notes and Highlights
- All of the Miz's movies are made by WWE, but the announcers trash them regularly. That's a terrible strategy to get people to buy DVDs.
- I would like to see a list of all the names of the themed Street Fights WWE has had over the years.
- What Ziggler did to the Miz with the tub of water and apples might count as torture in the Geneva Conventions.
Paige vs. Natalya
5 of 8Paige is finally standing on her own after turning on Charlotte and Becky Lynch, which means we finally get to see her unleash her heel side instead of holding it back.
With the level of talent Paige and Natalya have, everyone went into this expecting a great match. Unfortunately, all we got was two minutes of Paige kicking Natalya's butt and then a post-match attack from Team B.A.D.
Natalya deserves so much better than what she is being given, but she is a team player who is willing to put over young talent.
Grade: C-
Notes and Highlights
- Apparently Natalya never saw her attacker from two weeks ago, so she doesn't know if it was Paige.
- Its nice to see Sasha Banks being positioned as the leader of Team B.A.D. She has the most potential out of the three women.
- This might be the first Halloween when Divas weren't made to wear skimpy costumes and wrestle in some ridiculous gimmick match. That's progress.
Alberto Del Rio vs. R-Truth
6 of 8Alberto Del Rio and Zeb Colter returned to SmackDown with a promo talking about how the United States Championship would now be known as the MexAmerican title.
Del Rio took on R-Truth, which meant he was going to pick up an easy win. Truth put up a fight like he always does, but he is a glorified jobber these days, so the outcome was inevitable.
This was Del Rio's third bout since returning, and he hasn't won a single match with the Cross Armbreaker. It's great to see someone deviate from using their finisher in every match.
Grade: C
Notes and Highlights
- If they are renaming the U.S. title, does that mean they will finally get rid of that ugly belt?
- It's only a matter of time before Jack Swagger shows up to complain about Colter ditching him for Del Rio.
- Has anyone explained why Colter is riding a scooter around? Are we supposed to believe he is still recovering from an injury he received several months ago?
The Wyatt Family vs. Dean Ambrose, Ryback and Cesaro
7 of 8Bray Wyatt watched from his rocking chair as his three disciples took on Ryback, Cesaro and Dean Ambrose.
This was a good match to end the show. Everyone was firing on all cylinders, with Cesaro and Ambrose getting the crowd on their feet with their respective brands of exciting offense.
Braun Strowman has only been knocked off his feet a few times since debuting, and Ryback was one of the few able to do it when he sent the big man over the announce table. Strowman flipped the table and helped distract Cesaro long enough for Wyatt to get in a cheap shot.
Luke Harper hit the Swiss Superman with his a big clothesline for the win. Holiday episodes usually end with a bayface victory to send the crowd home happy, but giving the Wyatts the victory was the right call.
Grade: B+
Notes and Highlights
- Braun Strowman reminds me a lot of Snitsky for some reason.
- Cesaro should have worn a Superman costume with the colors of the Swiss flag instead of the usual red, blue and yellow. It would have been hilarious.
- Finally, Harper is the one to get the win. He is the most talented of Wyatt's followers, and he deserves to be booked as such.
Final Thoughts and Predictions
8 of 8Considering this was the Halloween episode of SmackDown, it was a little disappointing to see that the only people wearing themed costumes were Renee Young and Bo Dallas. Sorry: Boo Dallas.
Ziggler painted some lines under his eyes to look like Nikki Sixx and the New Day strapped some horns to their heads, but that was about it.
It has to be noted that Dallas was pretty funny during his backstage segments, in which he was wearing a ghost costume and trying to scare people. He couldn't get Young or Ambrose, but he scared Mark Henry so much that the World's Strongest Man punched him in the face.
As a whole, this was a decent episode of SmackDown. Most of the matches were fun to watch, but there was very little in the way of storyline development.
Predictions
- Jack Swagger will challenge Del Rio to a U.S title match within a week or two.
- The Undertaker and Kane will return to challenge the Wyatt Family before the end of the year.
- Ambrose will continue feuding with the Wyatt Family through Survivor Series, where he will put together a four-man team to battle the stable.
- The Lucha Dragons will become the next No. 1 contenders to the New Day's Tag Team Championships.
- Roman Reigns will be the WWE world heavyweight champion before the end of 2015.
