Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney will be granted a testimonial match at Old Trafford during the summer of 2016, with a host of star names expected to participate in the event. The Red Devils captain has promised all proceeds will go to children's charities.

In honour of his outstanding contributions to the club, a United XI will take on an as yet unnamed team on August 3, according to Chris Slater of the Manchester Evening News. Fans and supporters reportedly pushed executive vice chairman Ed Woodward for the match.

Rooney has already set up his own charity organisation, the Wayne Rooney Foundation, to collect and distribute the proceeds.

Per Slater, he expressed his enthusiasm at the opportunity:

"

I would like to thank everyone involved in making this testimonial become a reality.

Most of all I want to thank the fans for all their incredible support for me and the team since I joined the club.

The match night will obviously be special for me and my family but I hope it will be a night of celebration for all involved and that we can also deliver one or two surprises.

Most of all I hope the fans will come out in force and help raise as much money as possible for these amazing charities, all of which are very close to my heart for different reasons.

"

The 30-year-old joined United from Everton in 2004 and has since become the club's third leading scorer of all time, just a single goal behind Denis Law and 13 behind Sir Bobby Charlton, via the Red Devils' official website.

In the past 11 years, he has won five Premier League titles with United, along with one Champions League trophy in 2008. At his very peak, he was one of the most feared forwards in all of football, but his numbers have taken a turn for the worse since the start of last season, per WhoScored.com.

With just two Premier League goals to his name this season, many believe Rooney's best days are behind him, but ESPN FC's John Brewin warns fans not to read too much into this testimonial match:

Regardless of his lack of production this season, Rooney has done more than enough over the course of an 11-year-career with the club to warrant a testimonial match like this one.

He'll go down as one of the best to ever done the iconic kit when all is said and done, and given his age, he's likely to retire as the team's top scorer.

As for the star names who might make a cameo appearance during the match, the list is endless, with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Ruud van Nistelrooy part of a tremendous group of players to have plied their trade alongside Rooney.
